Setting
I
“Where/when a story
takes place”
Setting
• Setting is where (location) and when (time
period) a story takes place.
• Setting is typically established during
exposition at the beginning of a text.
• Setting includes a few elements:
This encompasses
categories as broad as
planet or country and
more specific locales,
such as street, house, or
even room.
The Time
Some stories may not
give you a specific time
but you can guess the
time through clues and
hints that are in the
story.
Physical Location
Practice
Identify the setting in the following paragraph and then share it with the class.

IV
When Jonathan woke up, he knew something was not right.
There was no light coming through his curtains. His room was
dark. His mom did not yell for him to eat breakfast. There was no
smell of bacon. He slowly got out of bed and tiptoed to his
curtain. Peeking behind his curtain, he saw mounds of snow
piled outside. There was no chance that school was happening
today.
Character
II
“People, Animals or
Creatures”
Character
• Character is a person, animal, creature, or thing
in a story that writers use to perform
the actions along a plot line.
Types of Character
These are the most
important characters in
the story.
Minor or Secundary characters
They are not as
important as the major
characters. “The plot
doesn’t revolve around
them”
Major or Main characters
A B
There are two types, of which
there may be a couple for each.
Main
Characters
● Protagonist: This is the
main character, around which
the whole story revolves
● Antagonist: This character,
or group of characters,
causes the conflict for the
protagonist.

Identify the character in the following paragraph and then share it
with the class.
Once upon a time, a farmer had a goose that laid one golden egg every day.
The egg provided enough money for the farmer and his wife to support their
daily needs. The farmer and his wife continued to be happy for a long time.
But, one day, the farmer thought to himself, “Why should we take just one egg
a day? Why can’t we take them all at once and make a lot of money?” The
farmer told his wife his idea, and she foolishly agreed.
Then, the next day, as the goose laid its golden egg, the farmer was quick
with a sharp knife. He killed the goose and cut its stomach open, in the hopes
of finding all its golden eggs. But, as he opened the stomach, the only thing
he found was guts and blood. The farmer quickly realized his foolish mistake
and proceeded to cry over his lost resource. As the days went on, the farmer
and his wife became poorer and poorer. How jinxed and how foolish they
were.
Plot
III
“How the story develops”
Plot
The plot is the story itself, and more
specifically, how the story develops,
unfolds, and moves in time.
Plots are typically made up of five
main elements:
1.Exposition: At the beginning of the story, characters, setting, and the
main conflict are typically introduced.
2. Rising Action: The rising action starts right after the period of exposition
and ends at the climax. Beginning with the inciting
incident, rising action is the bulk of the plot.
3. Climax: It is peak of the story when the most action, drama,
change, and excitement occurs.
4. Falling Action: The story begins to slow down and work towards its end,
tying up loose ends
5. Resolution: It is like a concluding paragraph that resolves any
remaining issues and ends the story.
