Literacy
• It is vital to establish a criteria to assess the
  reading level of your students.

• In my opinion increasing numbers of children
are illiterate or read below grade level.

• Necessary to teach reading strategies in all
  disciplines.
Strategy
• Focus on the lowest level readers.

• Avoid over burdening the reader with material
  out of their league.

• Use outside sources, encourage reading for
  entertainment.
System
• Top readers- read on their own and read
  frequently.

• Middle readers- read on their own, definitely
need more practice and can benefit from
  assistance.
• Low readers need a lot of individual attention.
Closing thoughts

• In my opinion there are enormous of amounts
of children who are not reading at grade level.
Many can read, yet the level they read at
interferes with instruction. I suggest reading
groups before, afterschool, or during lunch.
