Linked data (Semantic Web) technology has been valuable in promoting govt transparency by allowing mashups of govt data in the US, UK and elsewhere. This talk overviews the promise, status and challenges in this space.
RPI Research in Linked Open Government SystemsJames Hendler
Open Government systems are changing the way that many governments around the world interact with their citizenry. Transparency and innovation are both enhanced by government openness and especially by government data sharing. Further, the linked data approach, using maturing semantic web technologies, has been shown to be very valuable in creating "mashups" in which government datasets can be combined in new and innovative ways, and turned into "live" infographics. In this talk, presented to the computer science department at PUC-RIO, we describe the research aspects of RPI's ongoing work in this area.

This presentation will discuss how just a few parts of the Semantic Web Cake can already boost your analytics by making your (big) data smarter and even more connected.
It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got SemanticsOntotext
With the tons of bits of data around enterprises and the challenge to turn these data into knowledge, meaning is arguably in the systems of the best database holder.
Turning data pieces into actionable knowledge and data-driven decisions takes a good and reliable database. The RDF database is one such solution.
It captures and analyzes large volumes of diverse data while at the same time is able to manage and retrieve each and every connection these data ever get to enter in.
In our latest slides, you will find out why we believe RDF graph databases work wonders with serving information needs and handling the growing amounts of diverse data every organization faces today.

Data Curation @ SpazioDati - NEXA Lunch SeminarSpazioDati
Some insights about data curation processes @ SpazioDati. How we're using Big Data tools, Linked Data technologies, to build our products: Dandelion API (dandelion.eu) and Atoka (atoka.io).
Linked Data has become a broadly adopted approach for information management and data management not only by government organisations but also more and more by various industries.
Enterprise linked data tackles several challenges like the improvement of information retrieval tools or the integration of distributed data silos. Enterprises understand better and better why their information management should not be limited by organisational boundaries but should rather consider to integrate and link information from different spheres like the public internet, government organisations, professional information providers, customers and even suppliers.
On the other hand, enterprise IT architects still tend to pull down the shutters wherever possible. The continuation of the success of the Semantic Web doesn't seem to be limited by technical barriers anymore but rather by people's mindsets of intranets being strictly cut off from other information sources.
In this talk I will throw new light on the reasons why metadata is key for professional information management, and why W3C's semantic web standards are so important to reduce costs of data management through economies of scale. I will discuss from a multi-stakeholder perspective several use cases for the industrialization of semantic technologies and linked data.

We know that the Internet can be used to donate to political candidates. Or make fun of them. But, with a little help from citizens, it can also make government work better. First, we’ll look at a handful of sites that aggregate government data and present it in useful ways. Then we’ll explore the process of distilling government data dumps and APIs to build our own sites.

Open government data and related services/applications are quickly growing on the Web. Although most agree that the government data has great potential in solving real world problems, there are still many challenges that must be addressed. This talk will describe several representative domain applications and provide concrete examples of evolving technical challenges remaining. We will show solution paths that have proven useful and make recommendations on the corresponding Semantic Web best practices.
• Scalability. How can we handle(e.g. search and cleanse) the 3,000+ raw/tool datasets, and the additional 300,000+ geo datasets from data.gov?
• Interoperability. Multi-scale open government data came from city governments, state governments, and national governments. How can one compare the GDP of the US and China, and later link to state-level financial data? Open government data covers many domains. How can one associate open government data with domain knowledge to build a cancer prevention application?
• Provenance and quality. How should provenance be leveraged to facilitate high-quality data management interactions (e.g. reuse, mash-up and feedback) between the government and the public?
"Why the Semantic Web will Never Work" (note the quotes)James Hendler
This talk refutes some criticisms of the semantic web, but also outlines some research challenges we must overcome if we are to ever realize Tim Berners-Lee's original Semantic Web vision.

Will your next doctor be a human being—or a machine? Will you have a choice? If you do, what should you know before making it?This book introduces the reader to the pitfalls and promises of artificial intelligence (AI) in its modern incarnation and the growing trend of systems to "reach off the Web" into the real world. The convergence of AI, social networking, and modern computing is creating an historic inflection point in the partnership between human beings and machines with potentially profound impacts on the future not only of computing but of our world and species.AI experts and researchers James Hendler—co-originator of the Semantic Web (Web 3.0)—and Alice Mulvehill—developer of AI-based operational systems for DARPA, the Air Force, and NASA—explore the social implications of AI systems in the context of a close examination of the technologies that make them possible. The authors critically evaluate the utopian claims and dystopian counterclaims of AI prognosticators. Social Machines: The Coming Collision of Artificial Intelligence, Social Networking, and Humanity is your richly illustrated field guide to the future of your machine-mediated relationships with other human beings and with increasingly intelligent machines.

IJCAI 16 keynote on the need to bring modern AI accomplishments of recent years into connection with the more traditional goals of symbolic AI (and vice versa).
On Beyond OWL: challenges for ontologies on the WebJames Hendler
The need for ontologies in the real world is manifest and increasing. On the Web, ontologies are everywhere — but OWL isn’t. In this talk, I look at some of the things that are not in OWL, but which are needed for the use of OWL in many Web domains. This talk explores some of the needs for ontologies on the Web in data integration, emerging technologies, and linked data applications – and asks where the features needed for these are in OWL. The talk ends with some challenges to the OWL, and greater ontology, community needed to see more eventual use of standard ontologies on the Web.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
