We believe that (in general) less people are reading
blogs. Other forms of content distribution that work well

Usefulness is key. This is different from viral link strategies.
Viral link strategies are generally focused on trivial
emotional and reaction-based triggers, part of what is
referred to as the cult of distraction. This results in links
from a wide variety of irrelevant sites that may not be as
useful as the more relevant links and “shares” cultivated by
getting people excited about something that is useful.
Because, Link building is not about the quantity of links. It’s
about the rankings and sales lift that the links provide. The
quantity of links don’t matter anymore. That’s why viral and
link bait strategies are increasingly irrelevant, because the
links they generate are also irrelevant.

Why Link Quotas Can Be
CounterProductive
The concept of coordinating content creation with the link building
process and discusses why link building quotas can sometimes result in
links that do not improve sales.
A problem facing link building today projects is a disconnect between
the goals of link building (more links) and the goals of the company
(more sales/leads/ad views). Additionally, there are “other signals” that
may be playing a role. This results in link strategies with diminishing
effect. The link builder did what they needed to do to fulfill their
contract.
This resulted in links that met agreed upon metrics. Yet despite having
an agreement about links, the quality of the links still fell short and the
project resulted in no increase in traffic, sales or leads.
There were two reasons that the link building project failed:

The links did not match the high quality of the site itself.
