On September 26, 2018, India's Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in the case against the Aadhaar system. The Business Model Canvas (BMC) by Alex Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur has been widely used as a tool for analyzing, designing and visualizing the business model of new and existing for-profit business ventures. However, the analytic framework of BMC is incomplete when one is trying to develop the business model for a social venture that seeks to achieve specific social impacts as a primary goal, with financial viability as a secondary, albeit important, consideration. This presentations introduces a purpose-driven approach to business model design, developed by NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, that puts the achievement of social impact as the primary design goal, and adapts the BMC to more effectively explore how different business models can be developed to achieve those impacts. This design approach also highlights how the financial requirements of a business model can be met with different financing models, and shows how the tensions between achieving social impacts and meeting financing requirements can be resolved through the design of an appropriate stakeholder model that generates a “shared-purpose” between the social entrepreneur and other stakeholders. It uses concrete examples of actual social ventures to illustrate how social impacts and financial viability are achieved in practice using this purpose-driven approach to business model design. Viewers invited to apply this holistic analytical framework to examine their own social venturing ideas, and to share their new learnings.

and under-served households and businesses. It is known for its customised product, doorstep financing and service, and
has installed solar home lighting systems in over 2,10,000 households across Karnataka, Kerala , Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil
Nadu and Gujarat. In partnership with regional rural banks, cooperative banks and microfinance institutions, and
community based organisations (CBOs), SELCO continues to innovate on appropriate financial mechanisms to bridge the
gap between energy needs and affordability. SELCO has 50-plus service centres across the six states and a dedicated
workforce of 450 people working round the clock to ensure that clean and reliable energy removes darkness and despair in
poorhouseholds.
SELCO is a system integrator, not a manufacturer.

Make the poor asset-creators
SELCO India team believes that its business should not dip into the non-expendable incomes of its target segment, most of
whom are at the bottom of the pyramid. This means, providing high quality clean energy solutions that will last for long and

Malaprabha Grameen Bank was the first one to start financing. They financed 100 systems and SELCO took a letter stating
thesametootherbanks,andalsoaskedthemtoparticipate.
And the third challenge was moving from solar lighting to solar power - to connect solar power to income generation and to
createessentialmarketlinkages.
Current marketing strategies:

Participating and putting up stalls and demonstrations in farmer fairs, village fairs during major festivals etc
Conducting demonstrations in potential end-users' homes, leaving demo home systems for a week for the end-user

This group comprises largely of small farmers/individual working households/home based workers/street hawkers. It also
includesruralinstitutionssuchasschools,hostels,healthcenters,banks,religiousplaces,refugeecamps.
For this case, we will need to look at vulnerable communities which are the lowest within this segment.
SELCO India is not a ‘product seller’ in a traditional sense of the term. SELCO works in the community to understand the
customer’senergyneedsandfacilitatesthesatisfactionofthatneedbyworkingwithallstakeholdersinvolved.
The main challenge or opportunity is how energy access and usage over time can be used to benefit the poor asset owners
(solar powered home systems and livelihood applications). The conventional paradigm of creating ‘cheaper’ products will
notworkastheyerodeintothenon-expendableincomesofthepoorandvulnerablecommunitiesmakingthempoorer.
In relation to this, we need to ensure that the increased productivity is also matched with appropriate market linkages and
accesstopatient,longtermfinancing.

Furthermore, lack of access to vulnerable communities is a challenge for SELCO, as is raising awareness among them of
SELCO’s offerings and the possible advantages that it can give them. Hence, a clear positioning strategy for the vulnerable
