Critical thinking is important for evaluating information and arguments. There are three types of convincing: trying to convince others, being convinced by others, and self-convincing. Critical thinking skills can improve judgement. Claims are statements that can be true or false, unlike questions or commands. Arguments attempt to convince a conclusion is true using premises as reasons to believe the conclusion. Analysis of arguments involves evaluating whether the premises truly support the conclusion.
This document discusses identifying explicit and implicit claims in arguments. It defines explicit claims as those directly stated using words like "because", while implicit claims refer to underlying assumptions and values. The document provides a framework for analyzing arguments by: 1) stating the thesis, 2) identifying explicit reasons and evidence for each, 3) determining implicit reasons and contextual evidence, and 4) evaluating the logic and validity. Identifying implicit assumptions is challenging but reveals the real issues and values underlying an argument.

Unit Lesson
This lecture continues with the discussion of rhetorical devices.
Downplayers
A downplayer is a word that is inserted in a sentence that undermines something that is being discussed. Let’s take a look at two
sentences that mean the same thing in their deepest structure, but that have radically different connotations due to one word.
“Brent got a B on his exam.”
“Brent only got a B on his exam.”
By inserting the word “only,” the person saying sentence two has downplayed Brent’s achievement. Most people would be
happy, or at least satisfied, with a grade of B on an exam. However, the second sentence seems to diminish Brent’s
accomplishment by indicating that a grade of B on the exam does not meet his or her expectations of Brent. You can think of
downplayers as using scare quotes “” in verbal language. Let’s look at some more examples.
“Yeah, Ellen just got her ‘degree’,”
In this case, the person seems to indicate ...
Informal Fallacies
Enterline Design Services LLC/iStock/Thinkstock
Learning Objectives
After reading this chapter, you should be able to:
1. Describe the various fallacies of support, their origins, and circumstances in which specific arguments may not be fallacious.
2. Describe the various fallacies of relevance, their origins, and circumstances in which specific arguments may not be fallacious.
3. Describe the various fallacies of clarity, their origins, and circumstances in which specific arguments may not be fallacious.
We can conceive of logic as providing us with the best tools for seeking truth. If our goal is to seek truth, then we must be clear that the task isnot limited to the formation of true beliefs based on a solid logical foundation, for the task also involves learning to avoid forming falsebeliefs. Therefore, just as it is important to learn to employ good reasoning, it is also important to learn to avoid bad reasoning.
Toward this end, this chapter will focus on fallacies. Fallacies are errors in reasoning; more specifically, they are common patterns ofreasoning with a high likelihood of leading to false conclusions. Logical fallacies often seem like good reasoning because they resembleperfectly legitimate argument forms. For example, the following is a perfectly valid argument:
If you live in Paris, then you live in France.
You live in Paris.
Therefore, you live in France.
Assuming that both of the premises are true, it logically follows that the conclusion must be true. The following argument is very similar:
If you live in Paris, then you live in France.
You live in France.
Therefore, you live in Paris.
This second argument, however, is invalid; there are plenty of other places to live in France. This is a common formal fallacy known asaffirming the consequent. Chapter 4 discussed how this fallacy was based on an incorrect logical form. This chapter will focus on informalfallacies, fallacies whose errors are not so much a matter of form but of content. The rest of this chapter will cover some of the most commonand important fallacies, with definitions and examples. Learning about fallacies can be a lot of fun, but be warned: Once you begin noticingfallacies, you may start to see them everywhere.
Before we start, it is worth noting a few things. First, there are many, many fallacies. This chapter will consider only a sampling of some of themost well-known fallacies. Second, there is a lot of overlap between fallacies. Reasonable people can interpret the same errors as differentfallacies. Focus on trying to understand both interpretations rather than on insisting that only one can be right. Third, different philosophersoften have different terminology for the same fallacies and make different distinctions among them. Therefore, you may find that others usedifferent terminology for the fallacies that we will learn about in this chapter. Not to worry—it is the ideas here that are most important: Ourgoal is to learn to identi.
In psychology, learning theory refers to how we acquire basic responses and behaviors. We study three different types of learning: learning through association (classical conditioning), learning through reward or punishment (operant conditioning), and learning through imitation (observational learning). Learning theory is explored primarily through the Behavioral perspective, which emphasizes how the environment shapes who we are and how we behave.

Basics of the Proposal EssayOverview In the proposa.docxJASS44
Basics of the Proposal Essay
Overview
In the proposal, you are asking someone to do
something despite the obstacle that are in the
way.
A general thesis might be something like:
Although there are these obstacles, X group
should do THIS THING because A, B, C
reasons.
That might mean something like this specifically:
Although it will enrage their allies in Russia, the
Senator Ron Wyden should continue to support
the nuclear missile defense because it is
essential to our security, provides jobs, and adds
stability to an unstable world.
Overview
This proposal must be directed at those who
can do what you want to have done.
This might mean you have to change what you
want done or to whom you are writing.
Because you are asking someone to do
something, your credibility is especially
important.
Excellent sources acceptable by your
audience are essential.
Respect for your audience is key.
Work to build bridges with the reader, showing
common grounds early.
How This Paper Is Different
This essay will not necessarily have a
thesis at the end of the first paragraph.
The guiding principal of the paper is the
proposal.
The organization will change depending
on what the problem is and what you
want to have done.
Formality levels will depend on who is in
your audience.
Topic Selection
You are strongly encouraged to
continue to work with the topic
you worked with in the Debate
essay.
Otherwise, choose a narrow
topic you already know
something about.
Local topics are better.
Choose a narrow topic and limit
it, as we did with the debate.
There is plenty of research to
support even very narrow topics.
Major Sections
There should be four major sections in the
paper.
Demonstration that the problem is a problem
Your proposal
Demonstration that your proposal will solve the
problem
Response to opposition
The organization of these sections and their
development levels will vary depending on your
topic.
It is your responsibility to discern how much is
necessary in each section.
Defining “problem”
“Problem” in this sense doesn’t necessarily
mean something horrible and terrible.
You might think of a “problem” as an opportunity
to do something better.
You might see a way for something going well to
go even better, which would work well for this
assignment.
Demonstrating the problem is a
problem.
Some audiences will readily believe the issue you
are addressing is a problem; some won’t.
Your first task will be to figure out what your
audience thinks of the problem you see.
For example, parking scarcity is generally
recognized as problems by students and college
officials.
Other problems you see may not be recognized by
your audience.
You will have to prove to that audience that the
problem is a problem.
Sources can be used in support of the argument
that the probl ...

Question 5Discuss Big Pharma’s role in the diagnosis and tre.docxssuser774ad41
Question 5
Discuss
Big Pharma’s
role in the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology
.
Decide an appropriate role for
Big
Pharma going forward, if indeed
Big Pharma
should have a voice in this matter.
Consider the opposing viewpoints and address the following questions:
A. What does each position believe? Why--what is the evidence being used for their arguments? Evaluate the quality of the evidence from a scholarly perspective.
B. Can you identify one or more logical points or pieces of information in each perspective even though you may not agree with that perspective completely?
C. What additional information would be helpful to know to evaluate each perspective more effectively?
D. What is a potential 3rd or 4th perspective that should be considered in this controversy? There are likely many other perspectives besides these two.
The 1st two perspectives we are considering:
1.
Big Pharma
has our best interests in mind. These companies fund valuable research projects that help us understand psychiatric conditions and appropriate treatment methods. Additionally, this research sometimes uncovers new psychiatric conditions worthy of new treatment methods. We can trust
Big Pharma
to do what is in the average person's best interest with respect to diagnosing and treating psychiatric conditions.
2. Because
Big Pharma’s
profits are directly tied to the treatment of illnesses, they do not stand to benefit from successfully and completely treating psychiatric conditions. In other words,
Big Pharma
does not profit when people are healthy. Therefore,
Big Pharma
does not have the average person's best interests in mind, and we cannot trust
Big Pharma
.
Question 4
Are there psychological syndromes and symptoms that appear only in certain cultures?
In situations where a syndrome shares symptoms with an established DSM diagnosis, is it appropriate to use the DSM diagnosis, an ICD diagnosis or the diagnostic term of the client’s culture-of-origin?
The 1st two perspectives we are considering:
1. Culturally bound syndromes and symptoms exist. That is to say, there are certain syndromes and symptoms that present themselves only among people of certain cultures.
2. Culturally bound syndromes and symptoms do not exist. These syndromes and symptoms are merely slightly different presentations of syndromes and symptoms found in the DSM.
While exploring this topic, please keep these ground rules in mind:
e tips:
Put simply, try to think outside the box. Too often, we polarize ourselves into yes/no, for/against positions rather than examining the issue in detail, understanding it, and seeing a truth or truths emerge from this understanding. Think of it this way: If I say the sky
is
blue, then I've stopped exploring. If I say the sky
isn't
blue, I've again stopped exploring. If I say "I don't know, let's find out," then I've opened myself to any possibility.
