1. Personalstatement
Throughouttime, engineering hasshaped human developmentand helped solvecomplex problems
to improveourqualityof life. Since a young ageIhavebeen fascinated by understanding how
electrical productsand deviceswork, and theproblemsthey aim to solve.I havealwayshelped fix
electrical faultsaround thefamily homewhich enabled me to develop practical problem-solving
skills.
Aftersuccessfully completing someelectrical engineering projectsin secondary schooland college
this maderealise that I wanted to pursuea career in electrical engineering.
The importanceof engineering and technology in oureveryday lives is growing yearby year,
particularly when it comesto renewableengineering.Thegrowing impactof global warming and the
mounting scientificevidence of manmadeclimatechangehasrefined the electrical engineering
speciality I wantto specialise in - I would like to becomea renewableengineer.
I pay close attention to developmentsin this space - in particular therecent Paris UN Climate Change
negotiationsand howcountriesareseeking to moveaway fromfossilfuelsand towardsa
sustainable,greenerfuture.Withmore wind,solarand electric vehicle penetration,further
innovationsin engineering areneeded to ensuregrid networkscan copewith increased flexibility and
varying usagepatterns.
At college I havedeconstructed and fixed severaldevicesincluding an electrical keyboard and
developed my very own reverse Archimedesscrew.I studied electrical and mechanicalengineering in
secondary schooland productdesign and renewableengineering atShootersHill post-16campus
and I havealready studied BTEC level 3 in engineering.Thishasalso given me an understanding of
the complex manufacturing processesbehind electricalproducts.
I ama First Year Studentstudying Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Meng) including 1 yearin
Industry;atThe Universityof Greenwich (Medway Campus).
I believe relating theoreticalknowledgeto the real world is vital to an engineer.I havealso enjoyed
learning mechanics, which hastaughtme theskill of evaluating theoutcomeof a physicalobject
withoutactually experimenting.
To furtherincreasemy knowledgeof thedifferentdisciplines of engineering I haveread various
engineering leaflets,guidesincluding "Engineering:BeginnersGuides". This gaveme a greatpleasure
to discoverthe remarkablehistory behind engineering and theinsightinto the possiblethought
processesthatengineersmightgo through.Learning abouttheworkof Da Vinci, Bruneland Edison
also inspired me furtherto guide my career choice.
In addition, lastyearI wasgiven thechance to shadow theMPMarcusJones, who is the Ministerfor
Local Government. Throughouttheday Iassisted with severaladministrativetasksand gotto meet
his staff team. This experienceallowed me to gain insightand a better understanding and a working
knowledgeof howparliamentfunctions.Ialso really enjoyed being in a completely new environment
and networking withnewpeople.
This opportunitywas a direct result of my membership on DePaulUK’sLondon Youth Advisory Board,
of which I ama founding memberand partof thesteering group prior to its officiallaunch. My role
hasbeen to help devise theterms of reference and advertisementto recruit new members as well as
providing feedbackof howthecharitycan improveits services.
2. I strongly believe thatmy academic background, aptitudeand skillswill rise up to the standardsof
youracademicrequirements.Isincerely hopethat you will considermy application and lookforward
to hearing fromyou.
