Illya Sumanto is a poet activist who uses art to inspire children to become agents of social change. As a performer, she has shared the stage with powerful female poets from around the world to heal through spoken word poetry.
She developed a show with ‘SERONOK’, a multinational Indonesia-Malaysia-US-UK poetry-art-technology collaboration, where they performed in Jakarta and South East Asia’s biggest cultural and literary event “Ubud’s Writers & Readers Festival” in Bali, which she was also a judge for Women’s Poetry Slam there. In June 2015, she represented Malaysia by attending 100 Thousand Poets for Change World Conference in Salerno, Italy, and became a part of the organizing committee for its annual global events.
Her past experience as an educator includes Astro’s Oh My English 1&2 at School programme where she toured around Malaysia to almost 100 schools teaching English through Drama and Poetry. In 2015, Illya received a special award from the Education Faculty of University of Malaya for her achievements and contributions to the field of education.
Published in The Words of Womyn International 2016 Anthology, The WovenTalePress, and The BeZine, she conducted a poetry writing and performance workshop at ASEAN Literary Festival in Jakarta and a series of lectures on poetry and herbalism/witchcraft at the Cooler Lumpur Festival as well as in Ubud,Bali.
Recently , she was pronounced the Champion of Ubud Writers Readers Festival's Slam 2016.
