Tyler Woodruff chose soundproofing as the topic for his senior project. He has long played musical instruments loudly and wanted to address this issue. Through researching different soundproofing materials and their prices, Tyler designed an acrylic box surrounding a speaker box to dampen sound. While building his project presented obstacles like sealing the box correctly, Tyler learned about being an acoustical engineer and confirmed his interest in pursuing a career related to sound. He believes the senior project prepared him well for future challenges by allowing him to experience the process of researching and completing such a project.

Dear Judges
My name is Tyler Woodruff, and I chose soundproofing as a topic for my senior project. For
many years now I have played assorted musical instruments. However, these instruments have
caused me the same problem of being too loud for the people around me. So when i had the
chance to do something about this problem I jumped right on it. Because building an entire
soundproof room would be too expensive, I decided that for my senior project i was going to text
which soundproofing materials were the best to use for the best price.
Through my research I learned a lot about soundproofing and how sound works. I learned about
how sound is measured and all of the different types of measurements that are used. This
information helped me figure out the best designs to use for my project. My product was an
acrylic box that surrounded a speaker box and it worked to dampen the sound a little. There
were many obstacles to overcome in my project; however, the biggest one would probably be
trying to figure out how to seal the box correctly.
My project helped me learn a lot about being a sound or acoustics engineer. With my research i
learned all about how a sound or acoustics engineer would go about solving specific problems. I
also learned about many different things they study. This project also helped me learn that i
really like to field of acoustic engineering. I also learned that I have a strong desire to work hard
towards anything to do with sound.
I think that the senior project helped me a lot in the way of finding out how my job later in life will
go. This project was a great procedure for me to go through in order to get me ready for the
challenges that await me in the future. Thank you for your time.
