A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Letter of Support
1. Lake Barrington Academy of Stars
(where the children shine)
22102 Pepper Road
Lake Barrington, IL 60010
To Whom It May Concern:
We have had the good fortune to have Ms. Joni Downey teach in our preschool and early
childhood program for over 5 years. She is one of the passionate people and advocate for
building character with children at an early age. All of our children recognized each of
the “Characters” and understood “Friendship Frog” represented being a good friend, or
“Healthy Hippo” reminded the children to eat healthy and develop healthy habits! These
are just a few of the “Great Characters.”
Unfortunately, Ms. Joni left our employ to pursue her dream of getting her “Characters”
in all of the local school districts and neighboring community. Characters of Character is
great for the early learners and preschool children. The children can recognize their
favorite animals and relate to their message. We are thrilled to hear that “Characters of
Character is being considered for the Barrington Area. We feel the teachers would enjoy
the program along with all of the little children. Even our parents welcomed the positive
support and message of “Characters of Character.” As an educator for over 14 years, I
highly endorse Ms. Joni and the “Characters of Character.” Introducing this program at
an early age will provide benefits that last a lifetime. The program has an answer for
bullying, conflict resolution, building self esteem, making healthy choices, being a good
friend, being honest and having compassion. Isn’t this all of the qualities, we wish for all
of our children? Ms. Joni’s “Characters of Characters” knocks it out of the ballpark with
providing an introduction of a young child’s character and development. The benefits to
the children, teachers, parents and community are priceless.
Please let us know if you have any specific questions about the “Characters of
Character.”
Sincerely,
Noreen Stass, Director
