This document summarizes lessons learned from transit startups in small urban and rural communities, focusing on experiences in Valdosta, GA and the surrounding Southern GA region. It outlines that planning for transit services takes a long time, from initial studies in the 1960s to implementation of an on-demand service in Valdosta in 2021. The Valdosta on-demand service has been successful, providing over 65,000 trips in its first year to meet employment needs. However, it also faces challenges around demand exceeding capacity, driver and vehicle shortages, and the need for continued branding and service growth.
