I’ll check students’ comprehension by asking some questions orally and by
making a summary of chapter three and correct it.

 To greet students and start the lesson

Description and instructions: I’ll enter into the classroom and greet pupils. Then I’ll ask
them what day it is and I’ll take note on the board.
T: Good morning, everybody
Sts: Good morning, teacher.
T: What day is it, today?
STS: “it’s the 17th of October”
T: Good! First I’ll take the attendance …
Translation: Well, now let’s start with the class.
Warm – up (15’min):
Purpose:
 To develop speaking skills
 To correct homework
 To talk about main concepts of chapter three before reading it (Mandela’s wife,
Trial Treason, police violence, etc)

 Create a debate to involve learners on chapter three

 Speaking and listening abilities
 Cognitive abilities
Description and instructions: First, we will check homework and then we will start
talking about chapter three. We will focus on page 14.
T: We come to chapter three and so we first will check homework. Please, take out it and
open your book at page 14. What happened in 1957?
STS: Mandela Met Winnie
T: Good.. who was Winnie? Was she Mandela’s sister? Friend? Or Second wife?
STS: She was her second wife
T: Ok, So is the first sentence right? (pointing the first sentences of homework)
STS: No!
T: why? Who was Evelyn?
STS: Because Evelyn was Mandela’s first wife who left him when he was in prison
(possible answer)
T: Excellent! What happened in 1960?
STS: The police killed protesters
T: Good, So who used violence? The police or the protesters?
STS: The police!
T: Good, so Do you circle yes or no in sentences two?
STS: No!
T: Good! What do you think about sentence three?
STS: The answer is yes
T: Why? What do you think about it?
STS: Because in 1958 the Treason Trial began and in 1960 the government banned the
ANC that was leading by Mandela (possible answer)
T: Good! So sentence four is yes, too, or not?
STS: Yes!
T: Ok, and what about the last sentence? Can we know if the trial ended looking at the
dates?
STS: Yes, this happened in 1961
T: Ok, but can we know if Mandela stayed in prison after the trial ended?
STS: No!
T: Ok, and what do you think? Do you think Mandela remained in prison?
STS: Yes…. No…
T: Ok, let’s see what happened!
Transition: What is the first subtitle of chapter three?
Presentation (15’ min):
Purpose:
 To develop listening and reading abilities

 Make an activity while they listen to practise listening skills

 Listening and reading abilities
 Cognitive abilities
Description and instructions: Students will listen to chapter three. While they listen to
it they will do an activity in which they will match the sentences with the correct heading.
STS: The first is on trial for treason!
T: Good! And the others?
STS: Protest the Pass Laws!... Ban the ANC!... Free them!
T: Good! Now, we will listen to this chapter and you will match the sentences with the
correct heading.
While - reading activity: Match the sentences with the correct heading.
Sentences Headings
1. Oliver Tambo quickly left the country. a. On trial for treason!
2. There was violence in many places. b. Protest the pass laws!
3. Mandela left prison, a free man. c. Ban the ANC!
4. She gave him hope and love. d. Free them!
Answer: 1C, 2B, 3D, 4A
Once the audio finished….
T: Look them up in the text the sentences and underline them. Then compare them with
your answer and check if they were right.
Once they checked them…
T: Lourdes, read the first sentences with its corresponding heading, please!

 To review main concepts of chapter three
 To use visual aids (chart) to summarize the chapter

Description and instructions: The teacher asks learners about main concepts of chapter
three. They will have to skim the text and write words related to the concepts in a chart.
T: Look in the text who Winnie was, what Treason Trial was, what Sharpeville was, and
what happened with the ANC.(I’ll say it while I write on the board these words). Then
Complete the following chart with words or information related to these concepts.
After – listening activity: Complete the chart with information from the text.

After doing the task…
T: Ok, let’s see your answers! Valentin what did you write about Winnie?
ST: Mandela’s second wife…. (others answers)
T: Good! Did anybody write something else?
ST: Gave Mandela hope and love
T: Good!
(Students come to the front and write their answers)
Transition: You have worked very well today! Now, it’s time to focus on homework.
Homework:
Purpose:
 To start chapter four in their house
 To develop reading comprehension
Description and instructions: I’ll tell them to read the first subtitle of chapter three for
next class and do a multiple – choice task.
T: Open your reading book at page 20. You will read only the first subtitle and do the
following activity for next class… Please, give a photocopy to each mate… read the activity
Gabriel.
ST: Complete the sentences making a tick in the correct answer.
T: Thank you! What will you have to do? complete? Make a tick? Or match? (mimicking)
ST: Make a tick in the correct sentence
T: Good! This is for next class, do not forget to do it please!

Stages in the lesson Routine(2’ min): Purpose:  To greet students and start the lesson Teaching strategies:  Ask the date for practice Skills:  Listening and speaking abilities Description and instructions: I’ll enter into the classroom and greet pupils. Then I’ll ask them what day it is and I’ll take note on the board. T: Good morning, everybody Sts: Good morning, teacher. T: What day is it, today? STS: “it’s the 17th of October” T: Good! First I’ll take the attendance … Translation: Well, now let’s start with the class. Warm – up (15’min): Purpose:  To develop speaking skills  To correct homework  To talk about main concepts of chapter three before reading it (Mandela’s wife, Trial Treason, police violence, etc) Teaching strategies:  Create a debate to involve learners on chapter three Skills:  Speaking and listening abilities  Cognitive abilities Description and instructions: First, we will check homework and then we will start talking about chapter three. We will focus on page 14.
  • 4. T: We come to chapter three and so we first will check homework. Please, take out it and open your book at page 14. What happened in 1957? STS: Mandela Met Winnie T: Good.. who was Winnie? Was she Mandela’s sister? Friend? Or Second wife?
  • 5. STS: She was her second wife T: Ok, So is the first sentence right? (pointing the first sentences of homework) STS: No! T: why? Who was Evelyn? STS: Because Evelyn was Mandela’s first wife who left him when he was in prison (possible answer) T: Excellent! What happened in 1960? STS: The police killed protesters T: Good, So who used violence? The police or the protesters? STS: The police! T: Good, so Do you circle yes or no in sentences two? STS: No! T: Good! What do you think about sentence three? STS: The answer is yes T: Why? What do you think about it? STS: Because in 1958 the Treason Trial began and in 1960 the government banned the ANC that was leading by Mandela (possible answer) T: Good! So sentence four is yes, too, or not? STS: Yes! T: Ok, and what about the last sentence? Can we know if the trial ended looking at the dates? STS: Yes, this happened in 1961 T: Ok, but can we know if Mandela stayed in prison after the trial ended? STS: No! T: Ok, and what do you think? Do you think Mandela remained in prison? STS: Yes…. No… T: Ok, let’s see what happened! Transition: What is the first subtitle of chapter three? Presentation (15’ min): Purpose:  To develop listening and reading abilities Teaching strategies:  Make an activity while they listen to practise listening skills Skills:  Listening and reading abilities  Cognitive abilities
  • 6. Description and instructions: Students will listen to chapter three. While they listen to it they will do an activity in which they will match the sentences with the correct heading. STS: The first is on trial for treason! T: Good! And the others? STS: Protest the Pass Laws!... Ban the ANC!... Free them! T: Good! Now, we will listen to this chapter and you will match the sentences with the correct heading. While - reading activity: Match the sentences with the correct heading. Sentences Headings 1. Oliver Tambo quickly left the country. a. On trial for treason! 2. There was violence in many places. b. Protest the pass laws! 3. Mandela left prison, a free man. c. Ban the ANC! 4. She gave him hope and love. d. Free them! Answer: 1C, 2B, 3D, 4A Once the audio finished…. T: Look them up in the text the sentences and underline them. Then compare them with your answer and check if they were right. Once they checked them… T: Lourdes, read the first sentences with its corresponding heading, please! ST: Oliver Tambo quickly left the country… Ban the ANC! T: Good! (The same is doing with the rest) Transition: What do you know about the following words? Development(20’ to 30’ min): Purpose:  To review main concepts of chapter three  To use visual aids (chart) to summarize the chapter Teaching strategies:  Use of a chart to bear in mind main concepts of chapter three Skills:  Cognitive abilities
  • 7.  Reading abilities Description and instructions: The teacher asks learners about main concepts of chapter three. They will have to skim the text and write words related to the concepts in a chart. T: Look in the text who Winnie was, what Treason Trial was, what Sharpeville was, and what happened with the ANC.(I’ll say it while I write on the board these words). Then Complete the following chart with words or information related to these concepts. After – listening activity: Complete the chart with information from the text. Winnie Treason Trial Sharpeville ANC After doing the task… T: Ok, let’s see your answers! Valentin what did you write about Winnie? ST: Mandela’s second wife…. (others answers) T: Good! Did anybody write something else? ST: Gave Mandela hope and love T: Good! (Students come to the front and write their answers) Transition: You have worked very well today! Now, it’s time to focus on homework. Homework: Purpose:  To start chapter four in their house  To develop reading comprehension Description and instructions: I’ll tell them to read the first subtitle of chapter three for next class and do a multiple – choice task. T: Open your reading book at page 20. You will read only the first subtitle and do the following activity for next class… Please, give a photocopy to each mate… read the activity Gabriel. ST: Complete the sentences making a tick in the correct answer. T: Thank you! What will you have to do? complete? Make a tick? Or match? (mimicking)
