SUCCESS

What is SUCCESS?
INTRO
This is what the Lord says— your Redeemer, the Holy
One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you
what is best for you, who directs you in the way you
should go.
ISAIAH 48:17
Success. Everybody wants it, but not everybody gets it.
Why?
One of the reasons is that most people have the wrong
idea of what true success is. As much as we might not
want to admit it, most of us consider someone successful
if he/she is rich and/or well-known, regardless of how
much that person is happy with his/her life and how much
he/she contributes to the well-being of the people around
him/her.
Another reason is that most people don’t know how to
handle success. When it comes, it doesn’t stay for long
because one tends to mismanage things.
OVERVIEW
Without looking it up in the dictionary or on Google,
work out your concept of success by doing the
following:
START UP
Write down ten (10) characteristics you think a
person should have in order to be successful. Your
list may be in any order.
THE LIST
Now, pare down your list. Of those ten
characteristics, choose and encircle the number
of only three you would consider most
important or must-have to succeed. Encircle
those three.
THE LIST
Now, write down what you think
a person should have achieved,
become, or finished to be called
a success. List ten of those.
Again, your list may be in any
order.

Forget about those easy and
fast ways to succeed in books
sold online or in bookstores.
If an author or motivational
speaker insists there is a fast
but sure-fire way to succeed,
it's most likely a scam or
involves you buying more of
their products. Though
success is not a quick and easy
process, it can be summarized
into a list of do's and don'ts.
BUILD YOUR
CHARACTER
Fear has always been one of the greatest hindrances to
success.
Some people mistake this reaction for caution and even
common sense. But caution and common sense are
processes involved when you choose to pursue a dream and
not give up on it. Besides, most revolutionary ideas involve
some sort of risk and fear should not be given any headway.
To counter fear there should be a healthy and strong dose of
faith when in a risky undertaking.
NO FEAR, GOD’S
HERE.
KINDS
OF
FAITH
FAITH IN
THE PLAN
Faith in the plan - There should always be a plan. And you
should believe in it 100%. Just like every ship needs to have a
course to follow, a plan allows the visionary to map out the
steps they need to finish to reach their final goal. The plan
should be realistic, allow room for mistakes, and most
importantly, have
an objective. The more thought out and stable the plan is, the
more you can be assured of its success.
FAITH IN YOURSELF TO
FOLLOW THROUGH
The reason the plan is mapped out by you is that you yourself
will eventually follow that plan through completion. There's
no need to have a plan but do not believe in yourself enough
to do it.
Thomas Alva Edison once said, "Success is 10% inspiration
and 90% perspiration". So don't just focus on improving the
plan - get out there and do it. Believe that you can but prove
it by setting about the task on hand. Faith - even faith in
yourself - without works is dead, after all.
FAITH IN GOD TO HELP
YOU THROUGH
EVERYTHING.
The God who created you wants the best for you. He is the
One Who provides you with strength and motivation for you
to be successful. He is the One Who can help you when you
sorely need it so He must be the first one you should run to
whenever something goes wrong or things don't turn out the
way you wanted them to. Take the time to pray before setting
out to make the plan, setting out to work, or even before you
set your goals and dreams. Remember, he is God and He can
provide you with the best guidance on success than anyone
else in the whole universe.
WHO ARE YOU?
WHAT DEFINES
YOU?
Before we begin, as much as you
can, focus on your self, your
thoughts, your feelings, and your
being.
Don’t mind your seatmates.
Today is about YOU.
Take a deep breath.
Empty your anxious minds.
Imagine yourself being engulfed by
the vast universe.
In that darkness, imagine a small light. Go to that
light.
Imagine the person you admire the most. That
person you think is beautiful and attractive to
you. Imagine their face: their eyes, their nose,
their lips, their ears, their chin.
Do you like it?
Tell yourself, “It’s beautiful, but that’s not who I
am.”
In that darkness, imagine a small light. Go to that
light.
Imagine yourself looking in the mirror. Visualize
every part of your face: your nose, your eyes,
your lips, your eyes, your chin, and your ears.
Do you like it?
Whatever your answers be, tell yourself, “It’s
beautiful. It’s who I am.”
Think of your happiest moments.
Remember that special moment when you did
not think of how you look like.
Who made you laugh the way you laughed?
Who made you happy?
Think about them.
May it be your parents, your siblings, your
classmates, your friends, your teachers, your
special someone.
One by one.
Vision those important people in your life.
Think of how they have hurt you. Remember the
pain. Remember the words.
Think of how you’ve hurt them or disappointed
them.
Is that who you are?
Is that what you want to be remembered?
Is it impossible to be better?
Slowly let those memories fade in your minds.
Look for another light.
Imagine those people whom you are inspired.
Ask yourself, “Is this who I am?”
Then ask yourself, “Do I want to be like them?”
As you imagine floating in the universe, how do
you want to see yourself?
Who do you want to become?
Tell yourself.
I am not my mistakes.
I am not what they labeled me.
I am a unique beautiful person.
I can be what I want to become.
I am what I will become.
I have to love my possibility.
"If we see mistakes as bad, we tend to feel inadequate and
discouraged and may become defensive, evasive,
judgmental, or critical—of ourselves or others. On the other
hand, when mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn,
recognizing them will seem like an exciting venture."

Editor's Notes

  • #10 It takes a lot of dedication to become successful. While Mark Zuckerberg's friends were out partying, he would stay in his dorm room and work on coding his website until early in the morning. It is very difficult to put in the hours and hours of hard work needed to build a company from the ground up, without truly believing in and enjoying what you are doing.
  • #11 Not only has Facebook been the subject of lawsuits with former founders and legal battles over information confidentiality, it has even been banned intermittently in several countries. Through sheer determination and by having incredibly thick skin, Mark Zuckerberg and his team have remained strong in the face of adversity, being mindful of the hazards and hopeful of maneuvering around any challenge that comes their way.
  • #12 Not too many people would dare to believe that a project they had started in their college dorm room would end up becoming a worldwide phenomenon. While it is unlikely that Mark Zuckerberg was aiming for one billion users from day one, it is clear that he always had big ideas about his company's success and his overall vision for the future.
  • #13 When raising money for Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg took a series of significant risks. He shunned major investors, cancelled meetings, and ignored important phone calls, just to drive up demand. Eventually, he had twelve large investment companies clamoring to fund his site. While most people would have been too scared of missing out on an opportunity, Zuckerberg and the rest of the Facebook team believed in their product enough to wait it out.
  • #14 When Facebook began, it was only available to members of the top American colleges: Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, etc. Students from other colleges all over the country soon wanted to be part of this exclusive club. When major investors first heard about the project, they could not even access the site because registration required a .edu email address. By keeping the site exclusive, Mark Zuckerberg made sure that supply was never larger than demand and that Facebook remained a highly sought-after prize.
  • #15 When Mark Zuckerberg first launched his project, it had major competition from more than 20 similar sites, and each was in a far better position than Facebook. MySpace could boast over 5 million users, Friendster had raised $13 million in investment, and Orkut was backed by Google. While many entrepreneurs would have thrown in the towel at the mere thought of such tough competition, the perseverance of Zuckerberg and his team finally paid off.
  • #16 Zuckerberg once said that his mission was to "make the world more open". Nowadays, Facebook unites long-lost family members, reports conflicts in areas where free speech is banned, and has been a useful tool in planning uprisings against oppressive governments. Understanding your main aim, whatever it may be, and not getting distracted by unproductive ventures, is the best way to ensure that you reach your goal. Mark Zuckerberg's achievements were not the product of luck. He gained everything he has through a combination of hard work, passion, and the courage to dream big. By not shying away from taking risks and moving forward in the face of major competition, it is possible for any entrepreneur to be just as successful.
  • #33 When things go wrong or disaster comes, the winners always manage to stay afloat. Why? Because, in most cases, many of them swim to the surface of their problems while others just lay back and sink. They see the problem as a means to learn and improve. They view mistakes as part of a trial-and-error process that's required to succeed. They view hindrances as mountains to be climbed so you can get to the top. It's how you view your mistakes and trials that will make you either a better or a bitter person.

It's how you view your mistakes and trials that will make you either a better or a bitter person.
  • #40 Walt Disney had to go through many rejections before he finally had his iconic character Mickey Mouse onscreen. Disney, the company, also had financial problems along the way due to several film flops, but that didn't stop them from continuing to make animated films. Eventually, it was even able to buy out two of their competitors in film and TV - Marvel and Pixar - and is clearly the present leader in the animation industry.
  • #41 One must actively think of ways to stand up again and move forward. Deciding to not lose heart but standing up again is one of the greatest turning points in the life of every successful individual. So don't give up. Keep moving forward.
  • #45 Some people would willingly give up their integrity just so they can go after their dream. The best harvest is crops grown from your own field, not stolen from a neighbor's farm. To get to the top at any cost is utterly foolish. Just look at the corrupt politicians and business people who went through the "get-rich-quick" route. In the end, they always get caught and the shame and humiliation brought about by their greed and misdeed will forever haunt not only them but also their beloved families, kins and friends.

  • #49  You're in trouble when your success story is all about you. The best success stories always involve helping others. Most large companies have foundations or non-profit organization arms that help educate, feed, clothe and house the needy. These successful people include Bill Gates, Will Smith, Steven Speilberg, Angelina Jolie and Avril Lavigne. Put this list to heart and you are on your way to a successful future. But please remember that any kind of success would not matter that much without God being proud and happy for you and your achievements. And the best reward to everything you do is Him finally telling you, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
