3. In the beginning…
•Over a year has passed between
verses 11 and 12
•Jesus walked the walk and lived an obedient
lifestyle for another year after his
temptation period, before beginning His
ministry
•This timeline comes from analyzing the
other synoptic Gospels
4. 12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been
taken into custody, He withdrew into
Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came
and settled in Capernaum, which is by the
sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.
14 This was to fulfill what was spoken
through Isaiah the prophet:
15 “THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF
NAPHTALI,
BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN,
GALILEE OF THE GENTILES—
5. 16 “THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW
A GREAT LIGHT,
AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND
SHADOW OF DEATH,
UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and
say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is
at hand.”
18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of
Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who
6. was called Peter, and Andrew his brother,
casting a net into the sea; for they were
fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “Follow
Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
20 Immediately they left their nets and
followed Him. 21 Going on from there He
saw two other brothers, James the son of
Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat
with Zebedee their father, mending their
nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately
7. they left the boat and their father, and
followed Him.
23 Jesus was going throughout all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues and
proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,
and healing every kind of disease and
every kind of sickness among the people.
24The news about Him spread throughout
all Syria; and they brought to Him all who
were ill, those suffering with various
8. diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics,
paralytics; and He healed them. 25 Large
crowds followed Him from Galilee and the
Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and
from beyond the Jordan.
Matthew 4:12-25, NASB
9. A.The beginning…
•Vs 12-17, as we
mentioned earlier, a year
has passed since the
previous verse– more
prophecy fulfilled by
Jesus’ coming here…
10. 12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been
taken into custody, He withdrew into

Matthew 4:12-17 NASB
12. A.The beginning…
•Vs 12-17, as we mentioned earlier,
a year has passed since verse 11
•Matthew is recording things from
the perspective of the Jew waiting
for the King to come and overthrow Rome
•Capernaum became “home base”– most of
Jesus’ miracles and events recorded
happened in and around here in Galilee
13. “No temptation has overtaken you except
such as is common to man; but God is
faithful, who will not allow you to be
tempted beyond what you are able, but
with the temptation will also make the
way of escape, that you may be able to
bear it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13, NIV
15. 18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of
Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who
was called Peter, and Andrew his brother,
casting a net into the sea; for they were

Matthew 4:18-22, NASB
17. B. Recruiting Disciples
•Vs 18-22, the other gospels
describe some of these
meetings before with them
•This is when He asks them to leave their
professions and follow Him full-time
•Their immediate response is our cue
•“Every disciple of Christ is a Believer; but
not every Believer is a Disciple…
19. 23 Jesus was going throughout all Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues and
proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,
and healing every kind of disease and
every kind of sickness among the people.
24The news about Him spread throughout

20. 25 Large crowds followed Him from Galilee
and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea
and from beyond the Jordan.
Matthew 4:12-25, NASB
21. C. Preaching,Teaching, Healing
•Vs 23-25, First, He was
preaching– now He begins
teaching (subtle difference)
•And he starts healing
everyone– literally, everyone he meets
•Preaching connotes sharing the good
news with the lost– believers then must
be taught– fortunately we have both…
23. Lessons from the last two weeks
•God wants us to learn how Satan works against Jesus
and His followers
•The devil wants us to misuse our spiritual gifts to serve
our fleshly desires
•The devil wants us to take theWord of God out of
context to meet our pride
•The devil wants us to worship anything else but our
God
•God wants us to learn that Jesus’ victory in the
wilderness is an impending victory on the cross
•God wants us to learn that Jesus identified Himself in
our weakness and suffering as human by being
tempted, yet He didn’t sin
24. Take Home!
•Following Jesus, becoming a disciple,
is not easy, but the reward is great!
•Choosing to follow
requires everything
you have– but He
will abundantly
replace all we lose…
