2 Timothy 4.1-5
1 I conjure you therefore before God, and before the Lord Jesus Christ,
who will judge the living and the dead at his coming and in his kingdom,
2 That you preach the word, urge in season and out of season, reprove,
rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but
having itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers according to
their own lusts;
4 And they will turn their ears away from the truth and return to fables.
5 But you, be sober in everything, suffer afflictions, do the work of an
evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
6. INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we will see the importance of biblical preaching, also
called “Ministry of the Word”. In this aspect, to reflect the glory of
God, preaching needs to maintain the purpose for which it was
established: to reveal God and educate the church. Therefore, we can
say that the Ministry is important, as this way the church is built and
shaped by the values of the Kingdom. A church in which the Word of
God does not have primacy, both in evangelistic and disciple-making
action, is a weak church. Therefore, the nature of preaching needs to
be biblical and Christocentric. In other words, it must have solid
fundamentals. KEYWORD: Preaching
7. I - MINISTRY OF THE WORD AND ITS
PURPOSE
1. Preaching as Proclamation. The most sublime purpose of
the Ministry of the Word is that it reveals God to people.
Scripture often refers to this aspect of preaching as a
“proclamation.” The Greek verb keryssô, translated as
“proclaim”, is used in this sense in several New Testament texts
(Mt 3.1; 4.23; Lc 4.18; At 8.5; Rm 10.8). In this aspect, preaching
has the purpose of revealing God to people (1 Cor 1.21). This
fact alone shows the greatness of preaching: bringing knowledge
of God.
8. 2. The emblematic case of Lydia (Acts 16:14). While
Lídia listened to Paul's preaching, the Lord opened her
heart. Preaching was the instrument that God used to
reveal himself to that woman and the result of this was
her conversion. God is glorified in the revelation of her
Word. This fact is highlighted by Paul in his Letter to the
Romans: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing from
the word of God” (Rom 10:17). Thus, we must be aware
that the preaching of the Word of God is more than a
simple exposition of ideas, more than an impassioned
speech; it is the channel through which God reveals
himself to the hardened heart.
9. 3. Preaching as instruction. People who have been reached by the
proclamation of the Word need to grow and mature in the
Gospel, that is, they need to be discipled and instructed. It is
significant that Jesus' ministry has teaching as one of its
foundations: “And Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in
their synagogues” (Mt 4:23). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus
also “taught” his disciples (Mt 5.2). Likewise, the apostle Paul
spent much of his time teaching believers (Acts 18:11). Paul even
demanded that anyone with ministerial aspirations be “fit to
teach” (1 Tim 3:2). All of this shows the importance of the
teaching ministry and the responsibility of those who exercise it.
10. SYNOPSIS I
The Ministry of the Word plays a
role of proclamation and, at the
same time, of instruction.
11. II - THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD AND
ITS IMPORTANCE
1. The building of the church. The Word has the important
function of building the church. This edification comes
through the confrontation that the Holy Ghost brings
through the ministry of the Word, which exhorts and
consoles. Sometimes this can come in a tone of praise (1 Cor
11:2) or a strong rebuke (1 Cor 11:17). The Greek term
paraklésis, translated as “exhort” and “comfort,” means a
“call to help and encourage.” It occurs very frequently in the
New Testament, most often in the context of the church.
12. Thus, we see Paul asking Timothy to persist in
reading, teaching the Word and “exhorting” (1 Tim
4.13) and Luke highlighting that the church walked in
the “consolation of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 9.31). In
both texts the ministry of the Word is presupposed as
an instrument of exhortation and edification.
13. 2. Formation of values. Preaching is an important
instrument for forming a Christian conscience. The cultural
war waged in recent years against the Christian faith has
shown the need for the church to increasingly establish its
values. This, however, can only happen effectively through
the formation of a fundamentally biblical Christian
conscience. This means that the church needs to show, in a
very didactic way, its way of thinking, believing and acting,
that is, it needs to define its worldview, that is, its worldview.
A vision that is different from that of secular culture. This,
in turn, has always shown itself hostile to the people of
God. Otherwise, we will not be able to resist the inversion
of values that it disseminates.
14. 3. Resisting in the face of a godless culture. Jesus rebuked his
disciples, calling them a “perverse generation” because he saw
them acting with unbelief (Mt 17:17) - The influence of a godless
culture had negatively affected those who walked with Jesus. In
turn, at Pentecost, Peter also exhorted his listeners to save
themselves from that “perverse generation” (Acts 2:40). So Paul
also wrote that Demas, a friend in the Ministry, had loved that
present age and abandoned him (2 Tim. 4:10). This same apostle
exhorted the believers in Rome not to conform to that present age
(Rom 12:2). In the last two references, the Greek word aion,
translated as “age” or “century,” is a clear reference to a godless
culture.
15. SYNOPSIS II
The Ministry of the Word brings edification to the
Church, forms the values of the believer and raises
resistance in the face of a culture without God.
16. III - THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD AND
ITS FOUNDATION
1. It must be Christocentric. The Bible says that “when
Philip went down to the city of Samaria, he preached Christ
to them” (Acts 8:5). Preaching needs to be Christocentric.
Christ is the center of the Bible (Luke 24:27), the center of
the message of the prophets: “inquiring what time or
occasion of time the Spirit of Christ, which was in them,
indicated, previously testifying of the sufferings that were to
come to Christ and to glory that was to follow them” (1
Peter 1:11).
17. Thus, the aim of preaching is to reveal Christ.
Support, for example, was known for his eloquence
and ability to show that the Christ promised in the
Hebrew Scriptures was Jesus of Nazareth: “For with
great vehemence he publicly convinced the Jews,
showing from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ”
(Acts 18:28). Saying this, we need to highlight that the
form and methods used to expound the Scriptures are
important. However, the most important thing is the
revelation of its content, Christ Jesus.
18. 2. It must be biblical. We live in a time when
preaching in many spaces has become a fad. It seems
that we have too many “preachers”, but what passes
for preaching most of the time is not. They are
actually self-help messages with a veneer of
preaching. This type of message is attractive because
it softens the ego and generally gains many followers
on social media for those who use this technique.
19. However, they are not real preaching because there is no
exposition of biblical content in them. The emphasis is on
performance, form or way of displaying the theme to be
addressed. The objective is almost always financial (Phil
3.19; 1 Tim 6.9). The doctrine of sin, the appeal for a life
separated from the world and dedicated to God are
forgotten (2 Cor 6.17). This type of preaching is opposed to
the true Gospel of Christ. It is a message without a cross
(Gal 6.14-16). In fact, this type of preaching glorifies men
who are lovers of themselves (2 Tim. 3:1-5).
20. SYNOPSIS III
The Ministry of the Word must be
fundamentally Christocentric and, at the
same time, biblical.
21. CONCLUSION
After explaining this lesson, we see that the church needs to
remain faithful to the ministry of the Word. This can only
be done through genuinely biblical preaching that reflects
the values of the Kingdom of God. For this, there are no
shortcuts. In a culture increasingly hostile to the Christian
faith, the church needs to proclaim Kingdom truths
through the powerful preaching of the Word of God.
