Pre-conference delivered at Code4Lib 2014. This structured hackfest will give attendees an opportunity to explore methods to create responsive mobile apps using the Bootstrap framework and a set of APIs for accessing library data. We will start with an API template for creating space-based mobile tools that draw from work coming out of the IMLS funded Student/Library Collaborative grant. Available APIs will include a room reservation template and codebase for implementing at any campus and the set of Minrva catalog APIs generating JSON.
Hosts will give a brief report of a study on student hacking projects and interests in mobile library apps that are the basis for the templates utilized in this Hackfest. By the end of the pre-conference attendees will have a sample responsive mobile web app in Bootstrap 3 to bring back to their campus which can plug into their site-based content.
Research support with optical character recognition appsJim Hahn
A study that investigated first-year undergraduate student use of an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) mobile application designed to help students find resources for course assignments. The app uses textual content from the assignment sheet to suggest relevant library resources which students may not be aware. The study methodology used formative evaluation techniques; data were collected to inform the production level version of the mobile application and to understand student use models and requirements for OCR software in mobile applications.
This document provides the steps of a typical day for a girl named Goda in chronological order. It begins with her waking up in the morning and having breakfast. It then outlines her school day, including lessons, lunch, and after school activities. After being picked up, she has dinner and watches TV before doing homework and going to bed by reading a story. The document is meant to be reordered into the proper chronological sequence of Goda's daily routine.
The document describes the lime soda process, an obsolete method for softening hard water. It works by precipitating calcium and magnesium ions through the addition of lime (Ca(OH)2) and soda ash (Na2CO3). The process can be done hot or cold and involves a series of chemical reactions to remove carbonate, sulfate, and magnesium hardness. While once widely used to treat large volumes of water, the lime soda process has limitations and cannot produce completely soft water.
