5. What is a Beneficial Insect?

6. What are Beneficial Insects?
Beneficial insects are insects that have positive effects on
a garden or landscape, as they aid in pollination and in some
cases serve as natural pesticides.
Some predatory species of insects are the natural enemies
of many common pest insects that often infest garden areas.
Beneficial insects increase the ecological diversity of garden
areas and defend plants and crops from harmful insect pests.
Beneficial insects may also be known as beneficial bugs.
8. What are Legumes?
The legume family consists of plants that
produce a pod with seeds inside. The term
“legume” is used to describe the seeds of these
plants.
Common edible legumes include lentils,
peas, chickpeas, beans, soybeans, and peanuts.
10. SOYBEAN (Glycine max)
Beneficial Insect is:
Common name: Damsel bug
Scientific name: Nabis roseipennis
Damsel bugs are generalist predators that consume a
wide variety of prey including insect eggs, caterpillars,
mites, and aphids. They will also prey on other beneficial
insects such as minute pirate bug and big-eyed bugs.
Although they will also feed on some plants, they cause
no damaged. These beneficial bugs can be found in
landscapes, gardens, and many field crops. Their delicate
appearance belies their ability as predators of a variety of
insects in a variety crop.
11. Adults
Cone-shaped body. Many short, parallel veins
at the wing tips is characteristic of all damsel
bugs. The tibia of front legs is enlarged,
apparently for grasping prey. A long, curved
beak under a small head that has googly eyes.
DAMSEL BUG
Nymphs
No wings, but may have wing pads
in older nymphs where the wings are
developing. Beaks like adults. The
overall shape is somewhat like an ice-
cream cone. Mottled brown in color.
12. Common name: Wheel Bug
Scientific name: Arilus cristatus
- They prefer a variety of crops, including
legumes (peanut, soybean, sesame,
lucerne, mung bean). It's possible that
they'll play a big role in promoting their
populations in the bean fields.
- Wheel bug are generalist predators that
may feed on leafhoppers, plant bugs,
caterpillars and their eggs and larvae.
13. •Wheel Bugs are camouflaged and very shy, hiding
whenever possible. They move and fly slowly.
•Wheel Bugs are aggressive predators that attack a wide
range of soft-bodied insects, ambushing them with
assassin-like accuracy. They ambush their prey which
capture and pierce with their strong rostrum. Salivary
secretion paralyses the prey and dissolves its internal
tissues into a liquid which is sucked up by the bug.
14. Big-Eyed Bug
Generalist predator: Feeds
•Geocoris is a genus of insects in the family
Geocoridae .Commonly known as big-eyed bugs,
the species in Geocoris are beneficial predators, but
are often confused with the true chinch bug, which
is a pest. There are more than 140 described species
in Geocoris.
•Big-eyed bugs are considered an important
predator in many agricultural systems and
primarily feed on small caterpillars, flea beetles,
insect eggs, mites, thrips, whiteflies, and other true
bugs.
15. •Big-eyed bugs, like other true bugs, have
piercing-sucking mouthparts and feed by
stabbing their prey and sucking or lapping
the juices.
•Although their effectiveness as predators
is that nymphs can eat as many as 1600
spider mites before reaching adulthood,
while adults have been reported
consuming as many as 80 mites per day.
16. Common name: Ladybugs
Scientific name: Coccinellidae
Characteristics: have oval, dome shaped
bodies with six short legs.
Description: lay beetles, ladybugs or
ladybird beetles are among the most visible
and best known have black markings on
red, orange or yellow forewings, but some
are black.
Ladybugs or ladybeetles are considered a
beneficial bug which helps rid an area of
crop-damaging aphids, mealybugs and
other destructive insect pest.
17. Common Name: Minute Pirate Bug
Scientific Name: Orius sp.
The genus Orius is represented by very tiny
true bugs commonly known as minute pirate
bugs and flower bugs. Their common names
are representative of their small size and
favorite hangout while on plants. Insect
predators of the genus Orius are polyphagous
which means they are generalist predators that
feed on a variety of prey. Orius is typically the
first and most common predaceous insect to
appear during spring.
18. They play a key role in the management of various
agricultural pests in greenhouse and field
environments. They can be found in numerous
crops, pasture land and surrounding areas (e.g.
cotton, soybean, faba bean, potato, wheat, alfalfa,
maize, orchards, other vegetables and ornamental
crops), as well as trees, shrubs, weeds and many
wild plants. They prey on thrips, aphids, mites,
whiteflies, moths and other tiny arthropods as well
as insect eggs, inhabiting mostly herbaceous plants.
