Presentation by Ian Phillips and Annie Fergusson. The Australian Flexible Learning Framework’s annual E-learning Benchmarking surveys, which measure the use, impact and uptake of e-learning within vocational education and training (VET) have been completed. The results are now available via the Flexible Learning Framework website. The surveys show that 29% of all VET activity now involves e-learning. This is up from 17% in 2006 and 6-8% in 2005. The growth in e-learning is primarily being driven by RTOs that were already using e-learning and extending it to more of their students. Nearly half of all registered training organisations still say they do no e-learning. Tune in to find out about the latest trends in the uptake and use of e-learning with data from the e-learning surveys of RTOs, VET students, employers and VET teachers and trainers. See the extent to which different training organisations are using e-learning, and catch up on what individual RTOs are doing to benchmark their use of e-learning.
Coming Up: Ten challenges for workforce development. Presentation by Barb McP...Jo Kay
Businesses and workplaces are very different to how they were 10, even just 5 years ago. Critics of our national training system suggest competencies are out of date. Are they? Or, is it our approaches to learning and our understanding of what constitutes training that is now out of step with the needs we claim to address? At what point do the national VET system, workforce development needs and culture of organisational learning intersect? Siemens and Wegner, familiar to VET practitioners on the Australian conference circuit 2005-2006, promote connectivism-network learning theory, and communities of practice respectively as relevant alternatives to traditional classroom learning. In this presentation, Barb McPherson a veteran of six Australian Flexible Learning Framework initiatives since 2002 considers ten challenges to workforce development and how RMT is responding and preparing for change.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
We created a “realist” virtual world which is educational – not a fanciful gaming environment. In it we use the communication, education and social tools where students can learn in an immersive environment, build skills and confidence along with having fun. This 3D computer based simulation environment links students from Lithgow to Broken Hill into one class group where they learn, undertake tasks & activities together as well as socialise in real time. They can walk, fly or teleport around the virtual world to participate in classes, tutorials, group discussions, role plays, research, interviews and have fun with their friends. They can undertake group tasks together as a class or in small break out groups. Then in class break can hang out together, no matter where they are physically located geographically. Students who previously had to undertake their training on their own in isolation, can now belong to a cohort of learners undertaking the same training at the same time in the same virtual space. They can communicate with both voice chat & instant messaging. They even have the ability to communicate non verbally by their avatars appearance, gestures and animations.

The teachers and learners interact in real time Its accessible with a computer with a decent video card and broadband internet access with relevant support. Some of these IT issues can be a challenge especially the firewall and filtering policies. It’s a challenge we are still experiencing but to achieve the outcome we desire, we will persevere.
This is a learning environment where they become excited & enthusiastic about what they are doingStudents who are geographically isolated coming together in one learning space – a new version of distance edSo engrossed in their learning they did not want to stop … but … but .. Role plays that work .. Students demonstrated the skill & understanding that showed they were work ready. They walked the walk and talked the talk.
Just because we have technology, does not mean we engage them. Its how we use the technology
Engage a knowledgeable, skilled consultant to guide you through the process – there is so much you don’t know and don’t know what it is you don’t know. Have the IT team onside Be prepared to think laterallyKnow the content of what you are delivering & be able to make that content interesting and engaging. Make sure you have lots as they work through it at a far greater rate than you will anticipate. Sloodle quiz tools to the rescue. Be selective with your target group. They need to be interested in computers & have reasonable digital literacy.
Allow time for them to play at the start … if you can make the learning part of the play – all the better. They need to learn to exist in this new environment just as you do, so allow time for this to happen.Be prepared that the teacher will need their own tech support and that tech support will need a higher order of tech support as well.
