3. Listening
The skill of listening is one of
the most important skills you
can have. How well you listen
has a major impact on your
effectiveness and quality of
relationships with others.
4. Listening skills
Can you think of the reasons we may have to listen
to someone or something?
We listen to obtain information
We listen to understand
We listen to learn
We listen for enjoyment
5. So…
Considering all the listening we do you would
imagine people would be really good at it.
Most of us are not! Research has shown that we
only remember between 25-50% of what we
hear.
We can all benefit from improving our listening
skills.
6. Active Listening
If you practice active listening then you will
become a better listener.
What is active listening?
This is where you make a conscious effort to
listen to every word, paying careful attention
and not allowing yourself to be distracted or
become bored and lose focus.
7. Become an Active Listener
1. Pay attention
2. Show that you
are listening
3. Don’t interrupt
4. Respond
appropriately
5. Give Feedback
8. Pay Attention
• Give the person who is speaking undivided
attention and acknowledge the message with
body language:
• Look directly at the speaker
• Try not to be distracted either by thoughts what is
going on around you.
• Do not have ‘side conversations’ ie start chatting
amongst yourselves.
• Show that you are listening – nod occasionally,
smile and make small positive comments if
appropriate.
Pay attention, nod occasionally or give some positive verbal feedback. Look directly at the speaker to show that you are listening. Don’t interrupt and when you do respond make sure you respond appropriately. Be candid and honest, assert opinions respectfully.
Interrupting is a waste of time, it frustrates the speaker and limits full understanding of the message
