Spanning Tree Protocol
Although you have several alternatives to STP that are available for your data center, STP is still a fairly
popular technology in the data center environment. SPT build a loop-free logical topology when you have
redundant paths in your network.
Rapid PVST+
Rapid Per VLAN Spanning Tree Plus (Rapid PVST+) is an updated, faster implementation of STP that allows
you to create one spanning tree topology for each VLAN.

Port channels or aggregation of ports is one of the core technologies that you can use in Ethernet-based
networks. This technology enables you to bundle multiple physical links into a single logical link, which
improves resiliency and optimizes bandwidth utilization

Virtual Port Channels
A pair of Cisco Nexus switches that use vPC present themselves to other network devices as a single
logical Layer 2 switch. However, the two switches remain as two separately managed switches with
independent management and control planes.

INTRODUCTION TO ROUTING PROTOCOLS
OSPFv2 and OSPv3
OSPF is an IGP, used to distribute routing information within a single autonomous system (AS).
Designed expressly for IP networks, OSPF supports IP subnetting and tagging of externally derived routing
information. OSPF also allows packet authentication and uses IP multicast when sending and receiving
packets. OSPFv3 expands on OSPF Version 2, providing support for IPv6 routing prefixes.

Border Gateway Protocol
BGP is a routing protocol that provides loop-free routing between different domains, such as
organizations or autonomous systems. Cisco Nexus Switches support BGP version 4, which also includes
multiprotocol extensions, referred as Multiprotocol-Border Gateway Protocol (MP-BGP). It allows BGP to
carry routing information for IP multicast routes and multiple Layer 3 protocol address families.

ABOUT FIRST HOP REDUNDANCY PROTOCOL
FHRP
First Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP) is a general term for a networking protocol that is designed to protect
the default gateway by allowing two or more routers or Layer 3 switches to provide a backup for the gateway IP
address. If one first-hop router fails, the backup router will within a few seconds by default take over the
address.

HSRP
HSRP uses a group of routers to provide redundancy. You would configure each router an individual router-
specific IP address. All routers in the HSRP group are also configured with a shared group IP address known as
the virtual IP address. Routers generate a shared virtual group MAC address from the HSRP group number. This
group IP address presents the image of a single, fault-tolerant router to the client network.

VRRP
Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is similar to HSRP, both in operation and configuration. The VRRP
primary is analogous to the HSRP active gateway, while the VRRP backup is analogous to the HSRP standby
gateway. A VRRP group has one primary device and one or multiple backup devices. A device with the highest
priority is the elected primary.

ABOUT MULTICAST PROTOCOLS AND OVERLAY
• IP multicast is a bandwidth-conserving technology that reduces traffic by delivering a single stream of
information simultaneously to potentially thousands of businesses and homes.
• IP multicast routing enables a host (source) to send packets to a group of hosts (receivers) anywhere within
the IP network by using a special form of IP address called the IP multicast group address.
