2. PRE-INSTITUTE WORK
Now that you have registered for the Institute, there are a few things that we would like you to do.
We understand that you are probably busy with end-of-the-semester work and summer projects,
but we urge you to complete these tasks before you arrive in San Francisco. (Required work
highlighted in red below)
If you have any questions or difficulty completing them, feel free to contact your regional network
coordinator.
1. Review/be familiar with your college’s BSI self-assessment and action plan; bring both to
the Institute.
2. Select an existing program on your campus that you believe is attempting to address the
needs of under-prepared students. You may consider it to be successful or unsuccessful; in
either case, you are familiar with it. Analyze the program by addressing the bullets below.
You can respond to each with notes, visuals, or existing materials. You will share your
information with other members of your network—so please bring to the institute and
please, be brief!
• What is the program?
• How does it work?
• Why do you think it works (or does not work)?
• How do you know that it works (or doesn’t work)?
3. Sign up for the Student Success Conference on October 7-9, 2009 at the San Francisco
Airport Marriott Hotel by going to http://www.rpgroup.org/events/sss09.html; you need to
register specifically for the BSI Leaders Pre-Conference Session, which takes place on
Wednesday, October 7th, from 9am-12pm.
4. Save the date for the statewide ASCCC BSI Coordinators Workshop being held on
September 17-18 at the Hyatt Regency, Newport Beach. Registration details coming shortly.
5. You may—as an option—also want to begin planning to take a team of 3-5 (including
yourself) to the Dale Tillery Summer Institute for Community College Leadership and
Innovation at UC Berkeley, August 9-12, as they will be working closely with our leadership
institute and have taken as their theme, “Planning for Systemic Change in Implementing the
Basic Skills Initiative.” Your campus will be contacted directly about participation in the
Tillery in the coming days.
6. Please Note: You will receive an email soon from your regional network coordinator with a
link to a short (about 10 minutes) online survey. Please complete the survey before the
Institute begins.

3. ONCE YOU ARE IN SAN FRANCISCO
The cost of a Super Shuttle from San Francisco Airport to San Francisco State is

From the North: Take highway 101 south, cross the Golden Gate Bridge (toll $5). Take

right onto State Drive.
From the East: I-80 across the Bay Bridge to Hwy 101 South. Take 101 South (stay on the
right) to I-280 and take the second Daly City/Mission Blvd. Exit, bearing right onto
Sagamore St. and then to Brotherhood Way. Follow Brotherhood until it ends and then take
a right to merge onto Lake Merced Blvd. At the second stoplight turn right onto State Drive.
From the South: On I-280 North stay towards the left lane to exit at 19th Ave/Hwy 1 and
then bear to the right onto the ramp to Brotherhood Way. Follow Brotherhood until it ends
and take a right onto Lake Merced Blvd. At the second stop light; turn right onto State Drive.
From SFO Airport: Highway 101 to 380 junction to I-280 North (follow signs to SF). On I-
280 North stay in the left lane to exit at 19th Ave./Hwy 1 and then bear to the right onto the
ramp to Brotherhood Way. Follow Brotherhood until it ends and then take a right onto Lake
Merced Blvd. At the second stop light; make a right onto State Drive.
You will need to park in Lot 20 (E/4 on the map) and buy a parking pass ($5.00) for the day.
Parking
We will provide parking passes for all subsequent days. Passes expire at midnight, so you
will need to obtain from us (and post in your vehicle) the next day’s pass before midnight on
the day before.
Make your way to the Village at Centennial Square’s check-in office (G/3 on the map).
Once You Are on the SFSU Campus
Someone will meet you there and help you settle in before the evening’s banquet.
The rooms come in two or three bedroom suites with shared kitchen and bathrooms.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided in the dining hall on all full days. On the day of

provided. With the exception of the first night’s dinner, all of those meals will be provided
through food cards which give access to the City Eats dining hall. City Eats serves a wide
variety of creative and healthy foods.
San Francisco, particularly around SFSU, can be quite chilly, windy, and foggy in the

YOUR ARRIVAL & Departure
In June and July, the front desks at Towers @ Centennial Square Apartments and Village at Centennial
Square Apartments will be open 24 hours daily. The Science & Technology Theme Community front
desk is open from 8 AM to 12 AM daily. The desks are staffed by knowledgeable Residential Services
Assistants (RSAs). RSAs will facilitate the check-in and check-out process for your conference guests.
They can also assist with information regarding the City, the University, and services we provide.
Check-In begins at 4 PM
If you anticipate an arrival time before 4 PM., we will be more than happy to store your luggage in a
secure area until you are ready to check-in. Upon arrival, each guest will be asked to sign a Conference
Registration Card, much like a hotel. Once this card is signed, a room key, a bathroom key (if
applicable), an access card and meal tickets will be issued.
Check-Out is before 10 AM
Even if your conference does not end before the 10 AM designated check-out time, we ask that all
conference guests check-out of their rooms by 10 AM. A secure area to hold luggage will be
available. At time of departure, each conference participant will need to turn their keys and access card
back to the front desk.

Parking information
Conference Services does not provide guest parking.
All vehicles parking in San Francisco State University parking lots are required to have a valid SFSU permit. Parking is
enforced twenty-four (24) hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year. Lot 19 located behind the STTC on State Drive is
a faculty and staff lot and therefore a valid faculty and staff parking permit is required.
From 5 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday, all valid daily permits enable to park in any SFSU parking lot. Handicap spaces
require a valid SFSU permit in addition to a valid handicap placard or handicap/disabled plate. There is a 20-minute time
limit, while parked in a yellow zone. Vehicles in excess of 20 minutes will be cited. Parking is not
allowed in a red zone. Violators will be cited immediately.
The Parking and Transportation Office, located on North State Drive sells parking permits for Lot 20,
which are valid inside the parking structure, for $5.00 per day. Lot 20 permits are not valid on the roof
level except between 5 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday. Conference groups must coordinate parking
requirements in advance with the Parking and Transportation Department at (415) 338-1441. Specific

It is your responsibility to abide and follow all parking regulations at SFSU. The Office of Conference
Services declines responsibility for parking issues on or off campus.

elcome to San Francisco State University! My name is Matthew
Gilsbach and I am excited to have you with us this summer. I
just completed my first year of graduate school at Northeastern
University in Boston, Massachusetts where I am studying
College Student Development and Counseling. Upon completion I plan to go into
Student Activities or Residential Life. I am a proud alumnus of Gallaudet
University in Washington, DC where I received a bilingual education in American
Sign Language and English majoring in Communication Studies. I’m also a native
of Southeast Michigan. This will be my first summer here in San Francisco and I
am looking forward to sharing my experience with you.

your experience here this summer! My name is Ally Meo. I have
just completed my junior year at The College of New Jersey,
located just outside of Trenton, New Jersey, where I am currently
studying Special Education and Math, Science, and Technology. I am enrolled in a five
year program that culminates in a Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education.
Despite my choice of major, I plan on entering the field of Student Affairs upon
completion of my Masters. I have worked in the Conferences office at the College of
New Jersey for about two years on the planning end of summer camps and programs.
While this is my first summer in San Francisco, I am eager to bring a little of my East
Coast spirit to the Conference Services Summer Team!
