Mother Teresa's original name was Agnes Gonxha
Bojaxhiu. She was born on August 27, 1910 in Skopje,
Macedonia. Her father was a successful merchant and she
was youngest of the three siblings. At the age of 12, she
decided that she wanted to be a missionary and spread the
love of Christ. At the age of 18 she left her parental home
in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish
community of nuns with missions in India.
After a few months of training at the Institute of the
Blessed Virgin Mary in Dublin Mother Teresa came to

Mother Teresa was the youngest child of the Albanian

a date she considered her ‘true birthday’. She received
her First Communion when she was five and a half.
Raised in a devoutly Catholic family, her father was
an entrepreneur by profession. Her mother had a
spiritual and religious bent of mind and was active
participant in the local church activities.

5. Sudden and tragic death of her father when she was
eight years old left young Agnes disheartened. Despite
facing financial crisis, Dranafile did not compromise on
the upbringing of her children and raised them with
utmost love, care and affection. Over the years, young
Agnes grew extremely close to her mother.
It was Dranafile’s firm belief and religious attitude that
greatly influenced Agnes character and future vocation. A
pious and compassionate woman, she instilled in Agnes a
deep commitment to charity, which was further affirmed
by her involvement in the Jesuit parish of the Sacred
Heart.

7. EDUCATION
 Agnes attended a convent-run primary
school and then a state-run secondary
school. As a girl, she sang in the local
Sacred Heart choir and was often asked to
sing solos. Six years later, in 1928, an 18-
year-oldAgnes Bojaxhiu decided to
become a nun and set off for Ireland to join
the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. It was there
that she took the name Sister MaryTeresa
after SaintTherese of Lisieux.
