32. Why
AI
ethics?
At the end of the day, Artificial Intelligence (AI)
systems are man-made systems that mimic
existing social biases and power relations, and
as a result, potential harms caused by AI
systems can be anticipated.
MOOC Urban AI
33. What is AI ethics?
● AI ethics is a set of beliefs, concepts,
and methodologies to govern moral
behavior in the development and
application of AI technologies.
● Create ethical, fair, and safe AI
applications.

overview
35. The three waves of AI ethics
The first wave of AI ethics focused on what AI might do (e.g. Superintelligence) and amounted to the ethics
of fanciful scenarios of robot uprisings.
The second wave of AI ethics addressed the practical concerns of machine learning (ML) techniques: the
black-box algorithm and the problem of explainability, the lack of equal representation in training data and
the resulting biases in AI models, and the increase in facial and emotion recognition systems infringing on
citizens rights (e.g. privacy).
The third wave of AI ethics, one that confronts the environmental disaster of our time head-on and actively
seeks to engage academics, policy makers, AI developers and the general public with the environmental
impact of AI. it address the sustainability of developing and using AI systems in and of themselves.

Climate Change AI is a global
initiative to catalyze impactful
work at the intersection of
climate change and machine
learning.

37. Green AI
MOOC Urban AI
● The term Green AI refers to AI research that
yields novel results while taking into account
the computational cost, encouraging a
reduction in resources spent.
● The Green AI Standard aims to develop a
standard and raise awareness for best
environmental practices in AI research and
development.
● Developing machine learning models is
extremely costly for the environment.
● Training Bidirectional Encoder
Representations from Transformers (BERT)
on a GPU is roughly equivalent to a trans-
American flight (650kg CO2).
