This document discusses strategies for engaging communities that are unfamiliar with or suspicious of the planning process. It notes that communities are changing and public engagement must evolve to reach more groups. Both traditional and new techniques are outlined, including workshops, drop-ins, social media, translations, and meeting people where they are at locations like neighborhoods and festivals. Using community leaders, technology like online forums, and addressing barriers like language, schedules, and childcare can help involve more residents. Case studies from Lawrence and Brockton highlighted targeted outreach through a listening tour. The overall message is that an evolving set of techniques is needed to communicate with diverse groups in their preferred ways.

An alternative Routing Mechanisms for Mobile Ad-hoc NetworksPresentation2Aws Ali
This document outlines a student's research project on proposing an alternative routing mechanism for mobile ad-hoc networks. The student investigated existing routing protocols, proposed a new hybrid protocol, and simulated its performance in NS2 compared to AODV and DSDV. Simulation results showed the hybrid protocol had lower packet drop and loss rates than the other protocols. The hybrid protocol switches between proactive and reactive modes based on power consumption, mobility, and vicinity.

Community Engagement + Corridor Development Initiative = Results
After a difficult development project review process, have you ever wished there was a better way? Now there is. Learn about the Corridor Development Initiative (CDI) in this interactive workshop. Discover how neighbors can guide redevelopment to reflect their community vision -- how developers can reduce the amount of time between submitting a proposal and breaking ground. Join LISC Twin Cities to see how CDI's hands-on, win-win approach moves potential TOD opportunity sites into actual projects. CDI has been replicated by the Chicago Metropolitan Planning Council and is being considered by the Denver Regional Council of Governments. Hear why CDI has become a best practice in the Twin Cities and whether it might be right for your organization.

Mark Moran Adapting development practice to Indigenous contextDevelopment Futures
This document discusses several key points about indigenous development:
- Indigenous peoples make up about 5% of the world's population but 10% of the poor, facing significant disadvantages. Their contexts are complex with heterogeneity across communities.
- Development approaches for indigenous peoples need to recognize their political identities and rights frameworks while empowering capabilities for self-governance. Locally-based livelihoods may be prioritized over mainstream models.
- Problem-driven and iterative approaches work best for complex indigenous problems, engaging local stakeholders and learning from experiences. Principles for effective practice emphasize long-term participation, rights, cultural respect, and indigenous-led solutions.

This document provides an overview of the Going Places regional land use planning initiative in the Miami Valley region. It summarizes the reasons for developing the plan, which was to offer a regional resource and guide to assist local planning. Going Places seeks to answer three questions: where the region is now, if it likes the current trajectory, and where it wants to go. The plan included extensive community engagement. It developed a concentrated development vision based on common regional values. An implementation plan is now being developed to provide tools to help achieve the vision. Draft tools being considered include a regional GIS data system, enhancing an existing business site selection database, a development impact analysis tool, monitoring regional indicators, and identifying additional funding opportunities.
This document summarizes a presentation about how the city of Longmont, Colorado used positive practices and Appreciative Inquiry to engage the community and build resilience. It discusses:
1) How Longmont created a strategic plan called "Focus on Longmont" using Appreciative Inquiry to unify the community around a shared vision for the future. This resulted in increased community pride, cooperation, and ownership over the plan.
2) How Longmont integrated positive practices into its governance, operations, and culture by identifying champions, building internal capacity, and applying Appreciative Inquiry flexibly to other initiatives.
3) Longmont's next steps to transition from being a catalyst itself to inspiring community members
The document discusses a community engagement event called "Walk & Talk & Nuts & Bolts" that was facilitated by the author in Redmond, Washington to involve the local community in planning for the city's historic downtown core. Twenty-six community members participated in the walking meeting and provided input. The results of the project include the successful community event and a case study report analyzing the collected feedback to inform the city's further engagement efforts.

Public participation is the involvement of people in the creation and management of their built

Its strength is that it cuts across tradition professional boundaries and cultures.
The activity of community particiaption is based on the prinicple that the built and natural

The planning system is meant to reflect the general wishes of the local community and there is
a need on the local authority to consult widely during the formulation of a Local Plan and in the
operation of the development.
The fact that the Council is made up of elected members ensures a certain level of
representation, but wider public consultation is required.
When a planning application is submitted the local authority publishes details in the local
newspaper and, in some circumstances, a notice is displayed adjacent to the site. In cases of
special sensitivity, individual households in an affected area might be asked for their opinions or
there may be a small public exhibition.
However, in most cases, if members of the public wish to find out what is proposed they have to
visit the planning department, request the material that has been submitted and examine

The highlighted areas are where we specifically have impact for our citizens/customers
In implementing Equity and Social justice you build a set of goals around the 14 determinants
Established in 2010
"Determinants of equity" means the social, economic, geographic, political and physical environment conditions in which people in our county are born, grow, live, work and age that lead to the
creation of a fair and just society. Access to the determinants of equity is necessary to have equity for all
people regardless of race, class, gender or language spoken.
Defines ESJ foundational practices for the county to apply across all its actions to increase our influence on access to the determinants of equity:
Raise visibility of ESJ
Increase focus on upstream determinants of equity
Consider ESJ impacts in all decision-making
Promote fairness and opportunity in County government practices
Collaborate across agencies
Build community trust and capacity
