What is a layout?
 Consists of the arrangement of
illustrations, texts, and graphics on a
page which is to be printed
 Includes the selection of font styles and
colors
 Also known as “makeup”

PROPORTION
 Deals with the ratio of one part to
another and of the parts to the whole
 Pictures must be sized properly to keep
up with other shapes on the page.
 A long story may ruin the proportion of
the page.

UNITY/HARMONY
 Refers to the agreement among the
different parts of the layout
 Contents of a page must blend as a
harmonious unit.
 The headlines should complement each
other and pictures should not distract the
eyes too much.

BALANCE
 Deals with the feeling of equality or
gravitational equilibrium in weight
 Occult/Asymmetric Balance – visual units are
not identical but are placed in positions that
somehow produce a “hidden” balance

 Involves the differentiation between the
more important and the less important
 News articles must be displayed according to
importance through its position, style, and

 Use appropriate font style
 Maintain or make font consistent
 Do not over-emphasize headlines,

 Kickers are usually in bold format

articles or text are in 12 font size
