Emilie Delo and Marie Martin are currently participating in the Allegheny County Bar Association's Women’s Institute for Leadership in Law (WILL) program, established by the Gender-Equality Committee of the ACBA, of which Christie Tillapaugh serves as Co-Chair. There are 28 women enrolled in the inaugural nine-month program, which aims to prepare female attorneys for advancement to leadership positions in Pittsburgh-area law firms. An opening retreat was held in March at Carnegie Mellon University, and future monthly meetings will provide education and training on finance, developing business relationships and leveraging networks, effective negotiating, efficient leadership and resilience, among other topics.

Blurred Lines: Professionalism vs Personal Opinions in the Social Media WorldVictoria McIntosh
Everyone is on social media: you, your team, and your customers. In the current online communications climate it has become easy for us to speak our minds and share our thoughts, but much more difficult to control who hears them. What is said now lasts longer and travels farther than ever before, and the “delete” button can do little to undo damage. What would you do, if your employee takes to Facebook and rants about their workday, only to have an offhand comment be shared with customers and clients? When online actions have very real ramifications to public perceptions of our business, how do you protect your brand, without curbing future conversation? How do you find balance? How does your business reduce risk of social media casualty, while respecting your staff’s right to privacy, autonomous living, and freedom of speech? When is your business responsible for employee conduct, and when do you need to accept vulnerability? Information and privacy professional Victoria McIntosh counsels on the currently clashing climate of personalism vs professionalism; why your business should be active to reduce risks, and how to remain steadfast in the face of potential problems.

Learning Objective: Assessing methods for navigating corporate politics from the male perspective
Do you know why women are not sitting at the leadership tables in your organization? Have you ever thought that, if given the opportunity, you could help make your organization better? Many professional women have reported feeling left out of key decisions or impacted by the politics that lessen their contributions. At the same time, several top women executives who continue to excel say YOU must learn to understand, rise above, and effectively use politics to get things done. In her book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, COO of Facebook Sheryl Sandburg encourages women to promote themselves in order to achieve professional advancement. This session is part one of a two-part series that will help women to address the best methods of navigating organizational politics from the all-male panel’s perspective.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
a. Identify how men view organizational politics.
b. Learn the skills and traits used by male employees to be successful in organizational politics.
c. Explore possible opportunities and challenges in various industries.

Upside and Downside of Networking by Dudu MsomiDudu Msomi
The motivation behind of the research is based on the fact that entrenched socio-cultural stereotypes tend to undermine women’s ability to be leaders and managers across the social strata. Many women, and parts of society, have blamed the patriarchal bias as one of the unyielding obstacles to impede progress of women in leadership. In the last few decades networking has been touted as an essential skill for professional and business people to get ahead in business and people need to get out into the world and create and maintain business relationships. There is a view that representation of women in leadership would multiply exponentially if women were readily able and willing to collaborate and actively support each other using networking as the tool to do so.
The research explored this view and whether it bore fruits.

In 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs established a committee led by Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, former Vice Chancellor of National Law University (NLU), Delhi. This committee was tasked with reviewing the three codes of criminal law. The primary objective of the committee was to propose comprehensive reforms to the country’s criminal laws in a manner that is both principled and effective.
The committee’s focus was on ensuring the safety and security of individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole. Throughout its deliberations, the committee aimed to uphold constitutional values such as justice, dignity, and the intrinsic value of each individual. Their goal was to recommend amendments to the criminal laws that align with these values and priorities.
Subsequently, in February, the committee successfully submitted its recommendations regarding amendments to the criminal law. These recommendations are intended to serve as a foundation for enhancing the current legal framework, promoting safety and security, and upholding the constitutional principles of justice, dignity, and the inherent worth of every individual.

WINDING UP of COMPANY, Modes of DissolutionKHURRAMWALI
Winding up, also known as liquidation, refers to the legal and financial process of dissolving a company. It involves ceasing operations, selling assets, settling debts, and ultimately removing the company from the official business registry.
Here's a breakdown of the key aspects of winding up:
Reasons for Winding Up:
Insolvency: This is the most common reason, where the company cannot pay its debts. Creditors may initiate a compulsory winding up to recover their dues.
Voluntary Closure: The owners may decide to close the company due to reasons like reaching business goals, facing losses, or merging with another company.
Deadlock: If shareholders or directors cannot agree on how to run the company, a court may order a winding up.
Types of Winding Up:
Voluntary Winding Up: This is initiated by the company's shareholders through a resolution passed by a majority vote. There are two main types:
Members' Voluntary Winding Up: The company is solvent (has enough assets to pay off its debts) and shareholders will receive any remaining assets after debts are settled.
Creditors' Voluntary Winding Up: The company is insolvent and creditors will be prioritized in receiving payment from the sale of assets.
Compulsory Winding Up: This is initiated by a court order, typically at the request of creditors, government agencies, or even by the company itself if it's insolvent.
Process of Winding Up:
Appointment of Liquidator: A qualified professional is appointed to oversee the winding-up process. They are responsible for selling assets, paying off debts, and distributing any remaining funds.
Cease Trading: The company stops its regular business operations.
Notification of Creditors: Creditors are informed about the winding up and invited to submit their claims.
Sale of Assets: The company's assets are sold to generate cash to pay off creditors.
Payment of Debts: Creditors are paid according to a set order of priority, with secured creditors receiving payment before unsecured creditors.
Distribution to Shareholders: If there are any remaining funds after all debts are settled, they are distributed to shareholders according to their ownership stake.
Dissolution: Once all claims are settled and distributions made, the company is officially dissolved and removed from the business register.
Impact of Winding Up:
Employees: Employees will likely lose their jobs during the winding-up process.
Creditors: Creditors may not recover their debts in full, especially if the company is insolvent.
Shareholders: Shareholders may not receive any payout if the company's debts exceed its assets.
Winding up is a complex legal and financial process that can have significant consequences for all parties involved. It's important to seek professional legal and financial advice when considering winding up a company.

WILL’s nine-month program kicks off preparing
women attorneys for leadership positions
By Rebecca Canterbury
After working seven years as an
associate attorney at K&L Gates,
Mary Thibadeau is eager to advance.
“I want to move to the next step in my
career,” she said. “I’m ready to move
to the partnership ranks.”
But women comprise fewer than 20
percent of law-firm leadership positions
nationwide. In Allegheny County, the
figure is even lower – just 14 percent.
Indeed, there are more CEOs
named John and David than there are
female CEOs.
Women often begin their careers
with leadership-advancement aspirations,
but data shows that typically they lose
the ambitions to climb the ladder to
senior levels within just two years.
“Women can really get ambition
beaten out of them quickly because
they face unconscious biases in the
workplace that men don’t face,” said
Thibadeau. “It would be a loss to the
legal profession if they didn’t get to
advance to the highest stages.”
Thibadeau is one of 28 women
currently enrolled in the Women’s
Institute for Leadership in Law (WILL),
an intensive, nine-month program that
prepares female attorneys for
advancement to leadership positions
in Pittsburgh-area law firms.
WILL recruits women on the cusp
of attaining leadership roles, attracting
a diverse array of attorneys from
virtually every practice area and
background – including large firms,
solo practitioners, and in-house
counsel, according to ACBA Director
of Diversity and Gender Equality
Alysia Keating.
The program aims to develop a
“pipeline to leadership” by focusing
on everything from rainmaking to
commanding executive presence, said
ACBA Gender-Equality Committee
Co-Chair Beverly Block.
Attendees at the first meeting in
March learned tips and strategies on
deepening self-awareness, unlocking
self-limiting beliefs, countering uncon-
scious bias, building strong networks
and crafting an authentic leadership
brand with a sense of purpose.
“Women deal with backlash when
acting in their own self-interest,” said
program speaker Leanne Meyer, who
serves as executive director of the
Accelerate Leadership Center at
Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper
School of Business. “If a woman acts
ambitious, self-interested, advocates
for herself or is aggressive, we see her
as all the horrible words that can be
used for women.”
Participants learned how to combat
negative perceptions of women and
take action to achieve their goals.
“Hopefully, when more women are
at the top things will change,”
Thibadeau suggests, “but there aren’t
that many women at the top.”
The program’s focus on work-life
balance particularly resonated with
solo practitioner Abigail Salisbury, who
joined WILL in search of a community
of similarly situated lawyers.
“Focusing on building business is
super-important,” said Salisbury, “but
it’s also important to ensure your
life doesn’t fall apart while you’re
building it.”
Participants completed personality
surveys for the second meeting,
entitled: “Cultivating Self-Confidence
and Self-Assessment.” They discussed
ways to identify personality traits that
trigger emotional responses and ways
to give and receive feedback in a
positive manner, recounts family-law
attorney Mary McKinney-Flaherty.
David Lassman, professor of
organizational management at CMU
Heinz College, led WILL’s May program,
entitled “The Importance of Grit, a
Growth Mindset and Resilience to
your Success.” That session taught
the cohort necessary internal traits
and concrete steps to propel their
careers forward.
Future meetings will provide education
and training on law firm compensation
models and budgeting issues, finance,
developing business relationships and
leveraging networks, maintaining
internal and external business rela-
tionships, leadership presence, team
management, effective negotiating,
efficient leadership, and resilience.
Motivated by the monthly meetings
with the same group of high-achieving
women, Salisbury enjoys the
extended period of interaction to
grow as a group.
“It really gave me excitement for
the future,” she said. “I really like that
