3. Definition of Defamation
Defamation may be by words, either spoken
or intended to be read, or by signs or
visible representation. Any person who
makes or publishes any imputation
concerning any person, knowing or having
reason to believe that such imputation will
harm, the reputation of such person, is
said, to defame that person.
4. Act of defamation in India
• Section 499-Defamation
• Whoever, by words either spoken or intended to be read, or by signs or by
visible representations, makes or publishes any imputation concerning any
person intending to harm, or knowing or having reason to believe that
such imputation will harm, the reputation of such person, is said, except in
the cases hereinafter expected, of defame that person.
• Section 500-Punishment
• Whoever defames another shall be punished with simple imprisonment
for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.
• Section 501- Printing or engraving matter
• Whoever prints or engraves any matter, knowing or having good reason to
believe that such matter is defamatory of any person, shall be punished
with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or
with fine, or with both.

6. Cricketer Ravindra Jadeja filed Defamation
case against News Paper
RAJKOT: Cricketer Ravindra Jadeja has filed a
defamation civil suit of Rs 51 crore in civil court
in Jamnagar against a vernacular evening news
paper of Rajkot.
According to sources, the Abtak News Paper
which is publishing from Rajkot, had published
reports alleging all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's
alleged link with land grabber. Jadeja also owns a
restaurant on Kalavad Road in Rajkot.
Hiten Bhatt, lawyer appearing for Jadeja told TOI.
Bhatt said that cricketer has claimed an amount of
Rs 51 crore as defamation in the case against the
News Paper.
