2. We are going to read page 293 - 296 of the book which
examines our how the law sees you (as a child at six years old,
able to work at fourteen-fifteen years old and an adult at
eighteen years old).
We shall take notes along the way about at what age you can
get a job, go jail, etc.
You’ll work in pairs to answers questions on page 295 of your
main book and page 115 of your activity book, which looks at
emergency calls.
Plan for today
3. I will need about sixteen people to read page 293 - 296 of your
main book. Raise hands after each paragraph and take notes.
(note) Age Six – must go to school.
(note) Age Seven – age of criminal responsibility.
(note) Age Fourteen – can be employed for ‘light work’. If you
commit a crime, ignorance is not an excuse.
(note) Age Fifteen – part-time work is legal.
(note) Age Sixteen – can leave school, get married, work eight hour
days and own a dog.
(note) Age Seventeen – can get a provisional license for a car and
go to prison.
(Discuss) Do you agree with the above age restrictions?

4. I will need one more people to read page 295, then several to read
page 296 after the note. Raise hands after each paragraph and take
note.
(note) Age Eighteen – No longer a child. You can vote, claim the
dole, gamble, join the army or Gardaí and donate blood or organs.
You also do not need your parents permission for many things.
(Task) We are going to read #Action, Q.1-5 on page 295 first. You are
not expected to know the answers yet, which are on the next page.
(Task) We will then read page 296, which shows the rules for
working when you’re 14, 15, 16, 17 etc. Afterwards, we shall answer
the questions we read on page 295.
