(DVO204) Monitoring Strategies: Finding Signal in the NoiseAmazon Web Services
"You need to monitor only a few machines and applications before fixing issues in your environment becomes very complicated. Throw in the type of dynamic infrastructure provided by Amazon EC2, and your static monitoring strategies will most likely not scale. Knowing which metrics to watch and how to troubleshoot based on those metrics will help you solve problems more quickly. In this session, we will look at a framework for your metrics and how to use it to find solutions to the issues that come up. We will cover the three types of monitoring data; what to collect; what should trigger an alert (avoiding an alert storm); and how to follow the resources to find the root causes of problems. Session sponsored by Datadog.

Pipeline flow computers are designed for single-phase liquids and gases, requiring high accuracy measurement. Upstream flow computers must handle multiphase liquids and gases with impurities, prioritizing lower cost, tolerance of errors, and ease of use over high accuracy, as they are used to estimate well production for allocation rather than custody transfer. While upstream systems still need to conform to regulatory record keeping, API standards like 21.2 are designed for pipeline applications and do not directly apply to the measurement challenges in upstream production.

Autonomic Decentralised Elasticity Management of Cloud ApplicationsSrikumar Venugopal
This document presents an autonomic decentralized elasticity management system called ADEC for cloud applications. ADEC uses reinforcement learning where each instance independently monitors itself and learns optimal management policies over time through a reward/punishment system. Instances coordinate using a distributed hash table to provision and dynamically place applications across instances to maximize utilization while meeting response time and availability requirements. The system was evaluated on Amazon EC2 using a hotel management application under varying workloads, demonstrating ADEC's ability to independently start and shutdown instances to meet application objectives.
Automated acceptance testing is an important part of the deployment pipeline. It tests that the application meets business requirements and provides value to users. Creating maintainable acceptance test suites involves deriving tests from acceptance criteria, layering the tests, and avoiding direct coupling to the GUI. Non-functional requirements like performance and capacity also need to be tested. The deployment process should be automated and standardized across environments using techniques like blue-green deployment and canary releases to allow rolling back changes if needed.
