2. WHERE
The may crosses festival (Cruces de Mayo) is celebrated in many
parts of the world, especially in Latin, America and Spain.
It is also celebrated in Cordoba and Granada especially in
Cordoba
Cordoba is the 10th largest city in Spain it has a beautiful
mosque called la mezquita de Cordoba which goes back to 785.
It also has a synagogue and some lovely gardens with historical
links to Christopher Columbus.
3. WHEN
The celebration takes place during the first few
days of may with the first weekend tending to be
the busiest when visitors from all over Spain arrive
to join the celebration.
4. WHAT
St Helen had a son in battle he dreamed that a cross was going
to help him win in battle.This inspired St Helen to go to
Jerusalem in search of the cross that Jesus was crucified on.
The celebration is to welcome springtime.
Dancing, food, drinks and fireworks is also an important part of
the festival.
Temporary bars are set up and there is drinking and dancing late
into the night.
5. WHO
The people that celebrate Las cruces de mayo
live in the places that they are celebrated.
The actual crosses which are around 3 metres
high.
They are made by the people of the
neighbourhood and the local town council runs a
competition to find the best cross (concurso de
los cruces de mayo).
