Originated from the Celtic tradition in Britain
to celebrate Celtic new year, Samhain.
Considered a time between years when the
dead could walk among the living.
Became religious when the catholic church
decided the pagan holiday was wrong and
should be ‘all saints day’

Jack O’Lanterns
Originally an Irish tradition in which people carved
turnips to scare away evil spirits. Now we use
pumpkins!
Black cats
For over 2000 years, black cats have been thought of
as being evil spirts.
In the Middle Ages, people thought witches could
disguise themselves as black cats.
Trick or Treat!
In the United States, children will wear costumes
and go from house to house asking for candy by
shouting ‘Trick or treat!’.

Traditionally celebrated on the 2nd of November.
Families place offerings on graves to make sure their
loved ones are not forgotten.
