Additional Qualifications
    The Ontario College of Teachers publishes all additional
     qualification course guidelines, and organizes most courses into
     “Schedules.” Course prerequisites vary depending on the
     Schedule.

    All guidelines, which specify learning expectations for each
     course, are publically available for review at: http://www.oct.ca
     in the Additional Qualifications area.

    All course providers must meet strict accreditation criteria, and
     must comply with g
               py      government regulations in conjunction with
                                     g                 j
     the Ontario College of Teachers Act (i.e., courses are 125 hrs)

 Earn qualifications to teach grade level divisions:
   Additional Basic Qualification (ABQ) Courses
    Primary Division                 (Grades K-3)

    Junior Division                  (Grades 4-6)



    Both of these ABQs are open to all teachers who hold a General
     Certificate of Qualification and are a member in good standing with the
     Ontario College of Teachers.

         Focus on awareness, understanding
         Linking theory to practice in preparation to teach in the area of specialization

Part II
         Prerequisite: Part I plus 1 year of successful teaching experience (194 days)
         Expands on Part I
         Focus on program development, may include assessment
         Sharing and application of knowledge

       Prerequisite: Part II plus 2 years of successful teaching experience, with 1 year in
        the area of specialization

Principal’s Qualification Program
(PQP) Courses
(qualify to become a “school administrator”)

Prerequisites:
   5 years successful teaching experience
   Qualifications in 3 divisions, one of which must be the Intermediate Division
   One of a Master’s of Education degree, 2 Specialist qualifications, or one Specialist
    qualification and half the coursework toward a Master’s degree

Format:
   Part I - an introductory course presenting the fundamental operational aspects of leading
             and managing a school
   Part II - a more in-depth course exploring theoretical and operational aspects of the
              principalship
            - Leadership Practicum – work on your own with support from a Mentor on a school
              improvement project

   Combination of Face-to-Face, videoconferencing and online learning.

 1.   General Certificate of Qualification & membership with Ontario College
      of Teachers (OCT)

 2.   Register for AQ Program courses–visit our dept website:
      http://education.lakeheadu.ca/PDE and either register online or
      download & print an application form and send it to our office.

                        In order for an Additional Qualification (AQ) or Additional   .
                       Basic Qualification (ABQ) to be added to your Certificate of
                      Qualification, you must be registered with the OCT before the
                      recommendation is submitted to the College. The College of
                          Teachers will not accept recommendations which are
                                         submitted retroactively.

       Can take 2 AQ/ABQ courses during each of the Fall, Winter and
        combined Spring/Summer Sessions (3 or more courses per
        session requires “overload” permission from the Dean’s Office)
