Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ was a 19th century French painter and poet who specialized in Orientalist works. He traveled extensively in the Arab world while working for the French government, producing paintings and sketches that depicted Muslim societies. Two of his most famous works were "The Opium Smoker" and "The Evening Prayer at Tangiers," a realistic oil painting showing Moroccans participating in religious rituals and traditional clothing with varied coloring from bright in the foreground to paler in the background.
