I don't think we should cut
down trees. Too many animals
lose their homes and will
eventually go extinct.
But we need trees for wood
and paper. How could we
survive without those?
What do you think?

Brazil will use its security forces to fight
deforestation in the Amazon. It is worried
that too many trees are being cut down
in the world's largest rainforest. There
could be a big increase in deforestation
in 2020. The year has started badly for
our environment.

January compared with January 2019. A
new report says many areas of the Amazon
produce more CO2 than oxygen. The
Amazon is called "the lungs" of the planet. It
plays an important role in helping the
Earth's environment as it changes CO2 into
oxygen.

Brazil's Justice Minister approved the special security force to help track
down and stop illegal loggers. There was a big increase in illegal logging in
2019. Last year, damaging fires also swept across large parts of the
rainforest. Police with special military-style training will work with
environmental agency officials. Regional governments also need to
change. Some regional governments are selling off land to developers.
This is increasing the pace of deforestation. To make things worse, the
regional governments are doing little to replant trees in the jungle.
