L3 ap interaction of physical processes on landscapes
1. How have physical processes created distinctive
upland and lowland landscapes in the UK?
2. How have physical processes created distinctive
upland and lowland landscapes in the UK?
• There are a number of different effects on the UK
physical environment and these mainly come from
physical process which are:
1. Glaciation
2. Weather
3. Slope Processes
4. Post Glacial Rivers
3. 1. The effect of Glaciation
Glaciers are large bodies of ice that can have a
powerful effect on the land by both erosion and
deposition.
Watch this video to recap on last years work.
4. 1. The effect of Glaciation
a. Erosion
What is a corrie?
10. 1. The effect of Glaciation
a. Erosion
Corries are formed when snow collects in a hollow
and over years it forms ice. Then the ice erodes back
through plucking and abrasion to form a shallow
armchair shaped hollow in the landscape, a Corrie.
Upland or Lowland UK landscape?
In north Wales, Corries like Cwm Idwal (in the
Snowdonia National Park) have shaped this upland
landscape.
14. 1. The effect of Glaciation
b. Deposition
Glaciers deposit material when they melt. When they
melt the water flows out of the glacier and takes
sediment with it. This is then deposited as large
outwash plains. An outwash plain is a large area of
flat land made up of sediment from melting ice.
Upland or Lowland UK landscape?
Much of East Anglia is made up of glacial deposits
that are very flat.
15. 2. The effect of Weathering
• What can you remember from last year about
weathering?
17. 2. The effect of Weathering
• Weathering is the break down of rocks in situ (i.e.
in one place) and doesn’t involve any movement.
• Freeze thaw weathering works when …

• Upland or Lowland UK landscape?
• Freeze thaw weathering can be seen on upland
landscapes in the UK, like on the mountains of
Snowdonia in north Wales.
22. 3. The effect of Slope Processes
• Scree is the name given to the fragments of rock
produced by freeze thaw action.
• Scree is produced where temperature fluctuates
around 0°C, e.g. on high altitude slopes in
Snowdonia (North Wales)
• This angular, loose material is pulled by gravity and
falls to form the scree slopes shown below
• Upland or Lowland UK landscape?
• These slope processes mainly work in upland areas
like Snowdonia in north Wales.
27. 4. The effect of Post Glacial Rivers
• Rivers that are formed from the melting of glaciers,
can alter the landscape in a variety of ways. One
way that they can do this is by forming meanders
and interlocking spurs.
• Upland or Lowland UK landscape?
• Lots of these features are found on the Isle of Arran
in Scotland, an upland environment.
