Argumentative Essay (Final and Draft)
Overview
Argumentative essays differ from narrative, expository, or analytical essays fundamentally in
that you're writing to take a stand, to persuade your audience to accept a particular position,
to convince your audience of a particular argument. The emphasis in argumentative essays is
to make and prove an argument with convincing evidence and sound, logical reasoning. The
purposes and requirements for this essay, therefore, are quite different from those for the
previous essays.
Objectives
Through this assignment, you will learn to:
· construct an argument using various methods of argumentation,
· gather, summarize, synthesize, and explain information from various sources,
· incorporate sources into your argumentation using MLA style,
· produce coherent, organized, readable prose for different rhetorical situations,
· engage in writing as a process, including invention (such as brainstorming for ideas),
· developing a thesis statement, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading,
· respond to your classmates' writing and provide constructive feedback,
· respond to your classmates' response to your writing and learn how to incorporate
your classmates' suggestions into your revision,
· use grammatical, stylistic, and mechanical formats and conventions appropriate for
different audiences and writing situations, and
· reflect on your own writing and writing process and on your classmates' writing and
writing process.
Topic--Identifying a Controversial Issue
An appropriate topic for the argumentative essay should be one that
· interests you
· is neither too broad nor too narrow,
· is open to controversy, and
· is not already overly argued by other people.
Make sure your topic interests you:
Whatever topic you choose, it should be something that interests you, something that you
feel strongly about, something that's close to your heart. If it's an argument that affects you
and that you have personal experience about, it will be easier for you to build your ethos
with personal experience. However, keep in mind you do not want your personal beliefs to
interfere with building a sound, logical argument—this is not an opinionated paper.
Make sure your topic is neither too broad nor too narrow:
A topic like "presidential campaigns" might be too big for you to handle in a few pages. In
contrast, "the use of scare tactics in presidential campaign ads" might be easier to handle. In
a similar way, "advertising" sounds vague and broad while "truth in advertising" is more
focused. On the other hand, too narrow topics are those that deal with trivial topics that your
readers are not likely to be interested in.
Make sure your topic is controversial:
A controversial topic is one that people have different opinions about. For example, the
"illegitimacy of thefts" is not a controversial topic while "the appropriate punishment for
first-time theft offenders" is a more controve ...

Visuals
Recognizing the importance of visual communication, the 13th edition of Explor-
ing Language includes updated visuals. In addition to the nine photographic chap-
ter openers , we have added cartoons, print ads , comic strips, posters, sign language
charts, photographs, and more. Following each visual are "Thinking Critically"
questions, directing students to analyze the "language" of the images-the messages
and commentary projected from the designs and layouts . Each chapter includes
an editorial cartoon designed to connect to a current issue as well as the chapter ' s
theme.
Instructor's Manual
The Instructor 's Manual, which is available to adopters, includes suggested responses
to selected questions in the text. The Instructor's Manual also identifies questions
that are particularly good for in-class discussion or collaborative student work and
provides recommendations for additional online research.
Acknowledgments
Many people behind the scenes are, at the very least, deserving of thanks and
acknowledgment for their help with this 13th edition. It is impossible to thank
all of them, but there are some for whose help I am particularly grateful. I would
like, first, to thank those instructors who answered lengthy questionnaires on the
effectiveness of the essays and supplied many helpful comments and sugges -
tions: Wendy Crawford, Camden County College; Miriam Gershow, University of
Oregon; Philip Hu, Cerritos College ; Martin W . Sharp, Rowan University ;
Judith Stanley, Alverno College; Lori White, Los Angeles Pierce College. To all the
instructors and students who have used Exploring Language over the past 12 edi-
tions, I am very grateful.
A very special thanks to Kathryn Goodfellow for her enormous assistance in
locating material, writing the apparatus, and putting together the Instructor's Man-
ual under tight deadlines. My thanks also to Amy Trumbull for her help in securing
permissions for the text. Finally to the people of Longman publishers, especially
my editor Suzanne Phelps Chambers and her assistant Laney Whitt, and my devel-
opmental editor Anne Leung , thank you for your continuing support, understand-
ing, and enthusiasm throughout the production process of this edition.

Introduction:
Thinking and Reading Critically
What Is Critical Thinking?
Whenever you read a magazine article, newspaper editorial, or a piece of advertis-
ing and find yourself questioning the claims of the authors, you are exercising the
basics of critical thinking . Instead of taking what you read at face value, you look
beneath the surface of words and think about their meaning and significa.

Sustainable Practices in Event ManagementSindhBiotech
The following presentation is presented by our intern, Lucky Qindeel Panhwar, from Phase 1 of the ongoing SBA Internship Program.
In the era of acute pollution and threatening social and environmental conditions, the utmost importance must be given to finding and applying 'green solutions'. Because such a basis will provide both ecological and economic sustainability while ensuring good social practices.
The important is that "Sustainable practices must be in action, not just in the mind".
Launching an event successfully hinges on thoughtful planning and execution. The
Implementation of strategies that prioritize eco-friendly catering, sustainable venues, and environmentally conscious promotions, is key to effective Sustainable Event Management.

Potentials of Microfluids in Life Sciences: A Lab on a ChipSindhBiotech
Today marks the death anniversary of Mr. Werner Jacobi, the pioneering figure in microfluidics. While his initial focus was on microelectronics and semiconductor technology, he carved out a distinct path for microfluidics, diverging from his previous pursuits. His visionary approach continues to shape the trajectory of microfluidics research and its diverse applications in science and technology.
This lecture is presented by our team member and volunteer, Bushra Umer, from Volunteer Batch-V, 2023.
The lecture emphasizes the adoption of the "lab-on-a-chip" approach to ensure cost-effective and real-time experiments, underscoring the importance of developing such innovative techniques in today's modern arena.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

it is writing to inform it
comes close to being a

4. Scientific Writing
► Scientific writing is a technical form of writing that
► communicates scientific information to others in a document, book
or presentation in written form.
► A precise way to explain what is done, what is found, and why it is
done.
► It is a clear, simple and well ordered communication of the
transmission of new scientific findings.
► The purpose of scientific writing is to communicate new
scientific findings.
4
5. History of Scientific Writing
► Knowledge is lost without written records
► Cave paintings and inscriptions were the first attempts to leave
records
► About 2000 BC, Papyrus paper was used as a medium of
communication
► In 190 BC, parchment made from animal skin came into use
► In 105 AD, the Chinese invented paper.
► Knowledge could not be widely circulated with no effective
duplication
► In 1100 AD, the Chinese invented movable type

► I = Introduction, what question (problem) was studied
► M = Methods, how was the problem studied
► R = Results, what are the findings
► A = and
► D = Discussion, what do these findings mean
► If a number of methods were used to achieve directly
related results:
M + R = Experimental section
► The results are so complex that they need to be
immediately discussed:
R + D = Results and Discussion section.
