Editor's Notes

  • #2 Good morning. Today we will be presenting three themes which are closely related to each other, namely a situation of disrespect for Human rights which dates back to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a personality who fought against this disrespect and finally two films that draw our attention to the drama lived by black people during this period. Firstly we will be presenting the ku klux klan.
  • #3 The ku klux Klan, also known as the kkk or the klan, and which some of you may be familiar with, was and still is a right wing extremist organization. It is the most infamous and oldest hate group in the United States of America . It is the name of three distinct movements which began in the past and still exist today.
  • #4 The first movement which went from 1865 to 1870, was founded in Tenessee, at the end of the civil war, by six former members of the confederate party. At the time the number of members was unknown. The members used violence against African American leaders. They wore colourful robes, masks and conical hats. They fought towards restoring white supremacy.
  • #5 Forty-five years later, in 1914, the second movement was founded in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time it had between three million to six million members, who fought against Jews, blacks, Catholics and southern european immigrants. They wore a white costume. During the second movement the Klan added cross burnings and mass parades. They had full-time paid recruiters and members paid initiation fees.
  • #6 The third movement came about in 1946 and is still active today. It appeared in the form of small, local unconnected groups, with five thousand to eight thousand members. This movement fought against jews, blacks, mixed races, homosexuals and communism and defended white supremacy. They wear white costumes, masks and conical hats.
  • #7 These are the different kkk symbols adopted by the klan through the years.
  • #8 The kkk defends white supremacy and white nationalism. They are anti-immigration, anti-smitism and fight towards the purification of the American society.
  • #9 This is an example of a Klan Glossary, with some of the codes used by the members and the meaning.
  • #10 These are images of tortures which took place at the time. Black people were caught, tortured, hanged from trees or even burnt alive, just because they had a different skin colour.
  • #11 Although the kkk is still active today, it is not as strong as in the past. It is classified as the oldest hate group in history, and is a clear example of disrespect towards human rights.
  • #12 Throughout the years, many images, documentaries and films have been made about the kkk . The film Mississippi burning, made in 1988, is about an investigation carried out by two fbi agents who travel to Mississippi to investigate the disappearance of three civil right activists. Here is short trailer of the film. The film Blackkklansman was made in 2018 and is based on current events. It tells the story of an afroamerican police officer who infiltrates the local ku klux klan branch.
  • #13 With the killing of thousands of blacks at the hands of the kkk and the laws of racial segregation in the southern states, Martin Luther King emerged as the leader of the civil rights movement which fought against racial discrimination and the disrespect against human rights .
  • #14 Martin Luther King was born on the 15th of January on 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He died on the 4th of April on 1968 in Memphis, Tennesse. He was a pastor of the Baptist church. He was married to Coretta Scott. On the 4th of April of nineteen sixt-eight, Martin Luther King was shot dead by James Earl Ray, a fugitive, on the balcony of an apartment at Lorraine Hotel. At the time it was believed that he had been hired by politicians and other influential people, but this was never proved.
  • #15 Martin Luther King became known for leading the Black Civil Rights movement between 1950 and 1960 . King was an excellent public speaker and always managed to bring together a huge number of people in rallies and demonstrations against the racial segregation laws of the southern states.
  • #16 In 1964, Martin Luther King received the nobel peace prize.
  • #17 The first case in which Luther King was directly involved in the black civil rights struggle was Rosa Parks, who was a black woman arrested on December 1st, 1955, for refusing to stand and give her seat to a white man, on a bus. King stood out for publicly defending Parks and for organizing demonstrations against the bus company.
  • #18 On August 28, 1963, Luther King addressed a public of 250,000 people in Washington. It was in this speech “ I have a dream” that he expressed the desire to see his country without racial segregation. We would like to leave you with a short excerpt of his speech. Thank you.
