Displays of brilliance: 7-10 October 2015
KnysnaArtsFestival
presented by
1
Welcome to the Knysna Arts Festival 2015 – the second
stage in our journey to revive the festival that was
founded by Dale and Janny Elliott in the 1990s.
Through more than 70 events, this year’s Festival is a
celebration of both the visual and the performing arts –
and, with the addition of our Knysna Natter (with its
talks, walks and discussions) – of the brilliance of the
intellectual life of Knysna.
All this has been made possible with sponsorship from
Sotheby’s International Reality – whose staff (Peter Mare,
Natalie Scanlen, Richard Court) have become key (and
very keen) players in the project. Other members of the
organising team include Martin Green (organiser for the
performing arts), Joan Huskisson (Knysna Natter), Glynis Fish
(events), and the staff of Knysna & Partners. We thank them
all – as we thank the artists, crafters, musicians, actors,
scientists, businesspeople, and dreamers who’ve graced this
year’s Festival with the brilliance of their creativity.
And thank you, too, for your support.
Owen Roberts – Festival Organiser

An arm for Nadine – From Cat with Love
South-Africa-London girl with the golden voice, Cat Simoni, will appear at this
year’s Knysna Arts Festival for a very special purpose: to perform her show
‘From Cat with Love’ to help raise finance for a prosthesis for Knysna’s own
golden girl, Nadine Rodeom – an alumnus of Cresset House (part of the
Camphill Care organisation), who lost her arm after a vicious dog attack while
she was on holiday earlier this year. (Facebook: ‘Support And Love for Nadine.’)
In her show, Cat and her producer, Paul Spence (who provides the all-important
second voice, as well as the ‘patter’ that brings continuity to the performance),
draws from her wide repertoire of all-time favourites: showstoppers and
megahits from the likes of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Queen, Billy Joel, The Beatles,
Barbra Streisand, Sade, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Edith Piaf and more.
“After ten years singing for the international crème de la crème at London’s
5-star venues and exclusive clubs, The Ritz, Carlton, Dorchester, Mayfair et al;
Cat Simoni is back home and delighted to be entertaining South African
audiences!” www.catsimoni.co.za

and Best Comedic Performance, Durban Theatre Awards.)
Show times: Saturday at 16h00 & 19h30 in the Oakhill School Hall.

and comedians. He was involved with many of the Springbok Radio shows
that were recorded in front of live audiences in Durban from 1968 onwards.
In his show for the Knysna Arts Festival, Frank will perform extracts from his
popular review, ‘There was a Time’ – invoking memories of shows like
‘Missing Persons Bureau’, ‘The Men from the Ministry’, and ‘Squad Cars’,
and nostalgia for the days when the wireless was the only source of media
for home entertainment.

Knysna Sedgefield Hospice – and the rest of the world – for this moving event.
Show time: 17h30, Saturday. Vineyard Church Hall, Bokmakierie Street.
Ilizwi
This vibrant new South African musical comes to the Knysna Festival fresh
from the National Arts Festival Fringe 2015. Created by the acclaimed writer
and director, Ingrid Wylde, and Empowerdex’s Vuyo Jack – a singer himself
and a huge lover of jazz – this musical masterwork uses as its starting point
the rich history of South African jazz. Set in the 1950s and 60s in Meadowlands,
Soweto, and linked to the present through original, new compositions by
Zanika Mehta, Ilizwi is a love story told through great songs like Meadowlands,
Ntyiko, Ntyilo, Lakutshoni Langa, and Weekend Special. With creative
direction by Nox Donyeli with assistance from Ingrid Wylde and Sisonke
Yafele, Ilizwi is a triumphant celebration of local talent.

loves and career of the world’s most successful entertainer – Elvis Presley.
This show - which was devised, written, and produced by Roy, with sound,
visuals and musical direction by Baden Hall – is no Elvis impersonation.
Rather, it’s an appreciative reminiscence of the singer who changed the face
of popular music, as well the world’s approach to everything from style and
dress to our attitude to sex.
Roy Taylor has been involved in the entertainment business since he was 19.
He hails from Bournemouth in the UK – where he played in his own band,
The Johnny Quantrose Five – and he’s shared the stage with great musicians
like The Rolling Stones, Manfred Man, the late Cilla Black, and many others.
In South Africa he’s written for, acted and sung on stage and radio. He now
lives in Knysna.
Show time: Friday at 19h30 at the Knysna Golf Club. Includes dinner.
The Songbirds
Mike Stapleton (stage name Mike Shannon) was the lead singer with ‘Mike
Shannon and the Diamonds’ – which gave us the hit single ‘Blue Velvet,’ and
opened for many big names in the UK and Australia in the 60s. He founded
his choir – The Songbirds – in 2010. Amazingly, although none of its sixteen
members reads music, the choir has a successful track record of producing
shows that have raised money for charity. Their show for the Festival will
include music from the 60s and 70s.
Show time: Friday at 19h00 at Tottie’s Restaurant, Rheenendal. Includes dinner.

Stranger Things
This one-man show revolves around a restaurateur who’s struggling to control the
pandemonium that is his restaurant. A pedantic German chef, a half-deaf barman,

in unraveling the great twist in this dynamic one-hander starring Ryan Dittman.
‘Pure fun, a physical theatre and miming delight’ – Artslink 2014
‘In this quirky comedy Dittmann effortlessly and seamlessly transforms from
character to character’ – Cue 2014
Show times: Thursday and Friday at 15h00 in the St George’s Church Hall

Carla Engelbrecht and her team create exquisite, custom-designed, Venetian-style
masks. Carla’s presentation will include a display of masks, and a discussion on the
historical value of masks, and the reasons why the first masks were designed in
Venice, Italy in medieval Europe. (Besides its sales in South Africa, La Carla Mask
Atelier now exports to other African countries and to Switzerland and Germany –
and to Italy, too!) www.lacarlamasks.co.za. Facebook: La Carla Atelier.

FrackNation: Fracking Myths Debunked
The anti-fracking film Gasland has been widely screened, galvanising popular
opposition to shale gas. Journalist Phelim McAleer tested the claims made in
that film, and found ‘a litany of exaggerations and lies.’ FrackNation documents
his journey. Local journalist Ivo Vegter will screen this film and host a Q&A on
the shale gas controversy. Ivo is an independent columnist published weekly
in Daily Maverick, and is the author of the book ‘Extreme Environment: How
Environmental Exaggeration Harms Emerging Economies.’
Meet: Saturday at 14h00 in the Conference Room at the Conrad Pezula

Knysna Arts Fest 2015 programme

  • 1. Displays of brilliance: 7-10 October 2015 KnysnaArtsFestival presented by
  • 2. 1 Welcome to the Knysna Arts Festival 2015 – the second stage in our journey to revive the festival that was founded by Dale and Janny Elliott in the 1990s. Through more than 70 events, this year’s Festival is a celebration of both the visual and the performing arts – and, with the addition of our Knysna Natter (with its talks, walks and discussions) – of the brilliance of the intellectual life of Knysna. All this has been made possible with sponsorship from Sotheby’s International Reality – whose staff (Peter Mare, Natalie Scanlen, Richard Court) have become key (and very keen) players in the project. Other members of the organising team include Martin Green (organiser for the performing arts), Joan Huskisson (Knysna Natter), Glynis Fish (events), and the staff of Knysna & Partners. We thank them all – as we thank the artists, crafters, musicians, actors, scientists, businesspeople, and dreamers who’ve graced this year’s Festival with the brilliance of their creativity. And thank you, too, for your support. Owen Roberts – Festival Organiser Make the arts a part of your lifestyle • Go to visitknysna.co.za for information about where to stay, eat, and play in Knysna – the natural destination on the Garden Route. Sotheby’s International Realty • The Knysna Arts Festival is brought to you by Sotheby’s International Realty, with the assistance of Naturally Knysna, and the Knysna Arts Society. Tickets (where applicable) are available from all Sotheby’s, Knysna offices Displays of brilliance: 7-10 October 2015 KnysnaArtsFestival Note: programme changes & social media Our programme was correct at the time of going to press, but it is subject to change. KnysnaArtsFestival 32 Visual Arts Exhibitions Art for All The Eastford Art Group – which meets weekly and has held three successful exhibitions – includes a number of talented artists who work in diverse media. Demonstrations during the Festival will take place from 09h30 – 12h30: Thursday: Carmen Copestake and Clare Miller (sculpting) Friday: Lynn Schafer and Clare Miller (painting) Saturday: Anne Clarke (watercolours) Venue: 7 Fish Eagle Drive, Eastford Vale, Eastford Peter Barrett Peter’s beautiful landscapes adorn many homes. In his oil paintings, he captures the essence of the countryside – the sky, the forests, the streams, the quaint farm houses. You’re invited to see him at work in his studio, where he’ll demonstrate his remarkable ability to create impressionistic oils using a palette knife. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a successful artist who has held several solo exhibitions, and who exhibits country-wide. Google: Peter Barrett Landscape Artist. Venue: 26A Thesen Street, Hunters Home Lyn Beaton Lyn is a fine artist who has been practicing as a facilitator for seventeen years. She works in oils, acrylics, charcoal and pencil, and her subject matter varies from landscapes to still-life; more recently, she’s concentrated on portraits, people, and places. Visit her studio on the beautiful Leeuwenbosch Estate (one of the attractions on the Rheenendal Ramble – www.rheenendalramble. co.za) for her exhibition, ‘Images from Then and Now.’ Lyn will present monochrome portrait demonstrations from 10h00 – 12h00 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Venue: 47 Leeuwenbosch Estate, Rheenendal Sally Bekker Sally is a versatile painter who works in both oils and watercolours. She concentrates mainly on landscapes and seascapes from scenes in and around Knysna. She’s held several solo exhibitions, and has taught both beginners and more advanced painters for some twenty years. See her work at the Woodmill Lane Gallery, and enjoy her oil painting demonstration on Friday from 11h00 – 13h00. Venue: Woodmill Lane Gallery Margie Bolt Margie is fellow of the Watercolour Society who now also works in acrylics and oils, and who enjoys tackling a wide variety of subject matters. Her exquisite paintings of flowers adorn many homes throughout the country.
