The Marines were providing hands-on training for new gun truck operators who were unfamiliar with the systems. During an extra training session requested by the Marines, the door gunner suggested doing some unauthorized terrain flight along a narrow river for fun. However, the narrator decided against it due to safety concerns.

1. Ever have a day where everything starts great and
then goes all to hell? This was one of those days.
Many of the younger Marines rotating in to the
airbase were unfamiliar with the systems for the
assigned gun trucks, so we provided a lot of hands-
on training. Sometimes, they would request extra
training, which is what led to the following incident.
The door gunner suggested we spice up the flight by
dropping down and doing some terrain flight along a
narrow, winding river below. I had learned long ago to trust
my gut, and an unplanned deviation for a joyride just didn’t
pass the gut check.

A Soldier died after the vehicle he was riding
in went out of control on an icy overpass and
overturned. The Soldier, as well as the Soldier
driving the vehicle, were not wearing seat belts and
were ejected. The driver was treated for injuries.
SOLUTION

A Soldier, his wife and daughter were killed in an
early morning accident when their vehicle was
struck head on by an approaching vehicle that had
crossed the center line of a two-lane highway. The
Soldier’s son was hospitalized for injuries.
