Kula Hawai’i's vision emphasizes nurturing each student's inner voice and resilience while integrating Hawaiian culture and language into education. Since 2000, the program has aimed to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and foster industrious leaders connected to their heritage. Background to Kula Hawai’i vision 1990-2000 significant shift during the strategic planning process Strategic plan goal #3 Kamehameha Schools will cultivate, nurture, perpetuate, and practice `Ike Hawaii (which includes Hawaiian culture, values, history, language, oral traditions, literature, and wahi pana- significant culture and historical places- etc.)

5. Background continued… Nov. 2004- headmasters announced at each campus that we were committed to becoming more Hawaiian in our programs and processes. Tri-campus committee is convened to identify common language and cultural proficiencies that all students should have. Spring 2005- Hawaiian Language Competencies are identified and shared as a target for all graduating seniors beginning with the class of 2010.

6. Background continued… Since then, each campus has undertaken their own unique initiatives, additionally there are tri-campus initiatives. Where are we going? What is our vision? The leadership for all three campuses created the Kula Hawaii vision.

7. Kula Hawai’i Vision Strategic plan in 2000 embarked us on a new path of stewards of Hawaiian language and culture. All staff and students commit to learning that support renewed vibrancy of language and culture of Hawaii’s indigenous people. Our mission is to improve the capability and well-being of Native Hawaiians and we recognize that vibrancy of language and culture is vital to the total well-being of our culture.

8. Kula Hawai’i Vision We accept Kamehameha’s special kuleana as a Hawaiian institution for renewing this vibrancy. Kamehameha is committed to creating industrious leaders who will serve the communities in which they live and work. Key to this is the connecting their Hawaiian ancestral past to the present and future. We will continue to infuse Hawaiian language and culture as embodied by `ike and nohona Hawaii into our learning and all that we do at Kamehameha.

Every child we work with is in a different space in his/her life. Some will sing and sound as they leave, some only managing the first whisper of their greatness. None will leave voiceless or untouched. Until he/she can sing and sound on his/her own, someone will be there to support him/her. SY 2009-10 Expectations: -- infuse aspects of WEO as you can --continue to attend all ‘ike Hawai’i Monday meetings --incorporate and lift your own personal learning curve in terms of WEO and Standards -teams are incorporating WEO and Standards into FT requests --Standards early adapters have a task of 1-2 units to work on as well as regular feedback --All others should begin to infuse Indiana Standards into their maps/lessons
