Kloofsig IMAX and LTE Installation
Indran Padayachee, Executive: Regional Operations, requested his team at 17h00 the evening of the 14
th
of February 2013 to
urgently plan and install infrastructure at the Kloofzicht Lodge in Muldersdrift where a Board of Director‟s meeting was scheduled.
Activation date required: 2013/02/16.
An Ethernet link was required to access the Metro Ethernet network (POP) at Krugersdorp for both the IMAX terrestrial services
and the 8ta radio9 requirements.
Day One, 15 February 2013
1 A major challenge was to obtain a
full optical link (1Gbit/s) from
Kromdraai via Muldersdrift to
Krugersdorp and to complete the link
via a Telsaf microwave system at the
Kloofzicht lodge.
2. Line of sight for the microwave
system was required from the venue
to Kromdraai. This was a major
challenge as the venue is situated
between mountains. The Microwave,
Metro Ethernet and NGSDH planning
were completed by 16H00.
3. An IMAX system at Royal
Bafokeng Stadium was recovered to
provide the ADSL services. A mobile
Telkom truck was required for the
installation of the equipment. After
the truck battery was charged, the
truck transported the IMAX
equipment, Rectifier and Batteries to
site.
4. In the meantime the 8ta cow
(container on wheels) for the radio
services was also delivered to site.
5. An ALC2A Telsaf Ethernet
microwave was required to provide
the required capacity. The antennae‟s
were recovered by Telsaf and the
planning and material staff at Crown
Mines assisted to source the indoor
equipment at 16h30 in the afternoon.
Day Two, 16 February 2013-
From dusk (04:30am) to midnight
(12:00PM)!
1 Teams from NIP, Telsaf and
Telkom Mobile commenced with the
installation of the equipment. The
container and truck had to be moved
+-500 meters as the camp site was
too close to a helicopter landing site.
The LOS was again a challenge due
to the move; however, line of sight
was established later in the
afternoon.
2. An additional AC electric cable
(500 meters) had to be purchased
urgently and installed from the main
complex to the Telkom Truck. The
standby generator was also swapped
due to technical issues. The electric
cable had to be buried underground
due to vehicles travelling on the dirt
road. Various copper cables had to
be extended and installed for the
terrestrial ADSL circuits.
3. The NFS team assisted with the
linking of all optical connections at
the various sites and with the ADSL
installations. A challenge was the
splitting of the 8ta and IMAX circuits,
and to ensure the correct
configurations.
4. The Commercial and NIP staff
assisted with the releasing of the
ADSL orders and the NNOC staff Tier
1 did the configurations of the various
circuits.
5. The NNOC Tier2 staff provided
high level support to resolve backhaul
link issues between the ME
Microwave and the NGSDH system.
2013/02/17 @12.54am: 8ta is
satisfied that their services are
working properly and left the site.
2013/02/17 @13.17 am: DAS staff
satisfied with ADSL services working
from the IMAX and left the site.
A BIG WOW! An entire Network (VPN) planned, built and activated in just two days. Well done to the NIP staff
and all the staff involved from the cross functional organisations working together as a team to make this happen.
Your commitment and sacrifices is sincerely appreciated by all involved. Author:Johan Janse van Rensburg
