Coastal Zone and Small Island States (SIDS) Tourism Planning and Development represents some of the greatest potential travel experiences but also some of the most challenging planning procedures. Potential beach and dune erosion, rising sea levels and accompanying surges, wetland biodiversity protection and marine debris reduction are factors to be integrated into the comprehensive planning and development process. Furthermore approximately 75% of all tourism activities take place in the coastal areas creating pressure on the terrestrial and marine resources. Ecoplan:net has contributed to the tourism planning and development of coastal zones in Asia, Micronesia, North, south and Central Americas and Africa including the southern Red Sea Region.

Driving Australia’s National Geotourism Strategy through the AGCLeisure Solutions®
The Australian Geoscience Council Inc (AGC) has set up a National Geotourism Strategy Reference Group (NGSRG) which includes representatives of other key active stakeholders (e.g. the Geotourism Standing Committee of the Geological Society of Australia), and under the guidance of this reference group, other key stakeholder groups will be best placed to help deliver different parts of a National Geotourism Strategy (NGS).
This NGS is being designed to support the orderly development of major geotourism projects and activities in line with overseas trends and domestic regional development imperatives. The AGC sees the articulation of a strategy with a staged and incremental approach as being essential to ultimately gain government endorsement at all levels. The development of a National Ecotourism Strategy in 1994 and subsequent state/territory-based initiatives is considered as a particularly useful precedent and guide. Of significance internationally is the development of geotourism in Australia that lags many countries’ approach, notwithstanding the fact Australia has taken the initiatives in several areas in development of the concepts underpinning geotourism.
The pursuit of geotourism offers the potential for new industries and employment opportunities through the development of major projects within Australia. Also, very significantly from a strategic perspective, the AGC recognises that the development of geotourism may be one of the best ways to communicate the value of geoscience to the broader Australian community. The AGC considers that this improved profile for geoscience is likely to have a positive impact in other areas of strategic importance, most notably the need for continuing tertiary enrolments in geoscience, which is required to meet Australia’s needs for highly qualified geoscience graduates and researchers into the future.

Tourism as a Driver of Growth in the Pacific: A Pathway to Growth & Prosperit...SW Associates, LLC
Tourism to the Pacific is increasing and will be a key driver of economic growth in the coming decade. Yet despite more visitors to the Pacific, tourism growth is not inevitable for all countries in the region.
This brief identifies the trends driving this increase. To secure and sustainably harness the benefits of this growth, this brief recommends that Pacific island countries create an enabling environment for tourism through interventions in four areas:
tourism policy, strategy, and the regulatory environment; infrastructure; human resources; and product development and marketing.
Delivered at the 2014 Gossinger Distinguished Lecture Series, at NYU's Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management, my presentation focused on the phases and evolution of Sustainable Tourism (ST) over the past quarter century (incidentally the same timeframe as the growth of the Internet..) The presentation began with a recognition that the tourism resource base is eroding at a rapid rate. However an overview of the basic principles of sustainable tourism suggests we have the knowledge and the tools to greatly accelerate the implementation of ST procedures and practices. The timeline begins (Phase 1: early 1990’s) with the preparation of broad based ST Policies (Canada, Bahamas, Palau), and Ecotourism Plans (late 1990"s). The presentation then traces the evolution towards greater levels of specificity (and possibly relevance) including ST and Ecotourism Certification Programs (Phase 2: 2000-2010). More recently (Phase 3: 2010-2015) there has been a shift to Employee ST training and Certification (Bahamas) and the integration of ST standards within the basic Quality Assurance accommodation grading programs (Morocco, Lesotho, Southern Africa).
Yet despite all these efforts and market concern for the environment relatively little has been accomplished in integrating sustainability into the majority tourism of operations worldwide. This is in part because of the lack of awareness (and perhaps interest) by most senior management teams. Perhaps no more than 2%-3% of the managers of accommodation facilities (worldwide) have ever received training in ST procedures, technologies and practices. The Challenge therefore falls to the current hospitality and tourism management students and recent graduates to develop a professional 'Culture of Sustainability’. Furthermore, in this current phase (2015-2020), sustainability must become an integral part of all graduate and undergraduate tourism and hospitality management educational programs. The resources upon which the industry is built are diminishing at a remarkable rate with the vast majority of those professionals working in the sector lacking both the technical skills and awareness to implement sustainable tourism practices. It is therefore the responsibility of the tourism management schools to immediately integrate sustainability into their core program.
Food and wine experiences have long been an integral part of the State’s tourism marketing message promoting South Australia as a visitor destination.
However, despite South Australia being recognised as the home of Australian wine we cannot rest on our laurels, as other State’s aggressively target these opportunities recognising travellers’ desire for such experiences.
Furthermore, while South Australia has some outstanding food experiences, consumer research reveals that the State is not strongly associated with this attribute.
Acknowledging this, in 2008, the Minister’s Tourism Round Table established an industry led Food and Wine Tourism Working Group to address these issues.
This Group was asked to prepare a strategic plan to strengthen the State’s competitiveness in food and wine tourism and to forge stronger links between the food and wine tourism sectors.
This Plan is the culmination of the detailed investigations of the Working Group. It sets a clear path forward with detailed implementation action designed to realise the vision of SA being the world’s leading food and wine tourism destination by 2020.

At the international frontier, latest available data for Jan to April 2018 in terms of international tourist arrivals posted a global growth of 6.2%. All the regions enjoyed a positive growth over this period led by the Asia & the Pacific at 7.8%.
The robust trend reflected the continued solid growth seen in 2017 and consistent with strong results recorded in many destinations around the world. Growth to date also exceeds UNWTO’s forecast of 4% to 5% for the year 2018 as reported in the UNWTO’January edition this year.

On PIC key source markets, interestingly while Australia and NZ are still the two leading source markets for PICs in overall, there has been a switch in terms of the shares, leading source market for PICs, recorded a declining share from 34.5% in 2013 to 27.4% in 2018 Jan-Jun, while NZ market share has been increasing from 18% in 2013 to 20% in 2017. The switch in trends between the two countries also narrows the gap from 16% in 2013 to 7%. Similarly china share rose from 3% in 2013 to 7.7% in 2018 Jan to June. Other source market like Europe remain stagnant
