The development of productive and fully integrated linkages between the Agri-Food Sector and Tourism in the Caribbean Region offers significant potential for repositioning and broad-based growth in the Agriculture value chain, and opportunities for channelling the Region’s diversity and building-in genuine competitiveness and sustainability in the tourism product.
Forging Agriculture-Tourism linkages capitalizes on the inherent ability of the Tourism sector to diversify the Caribbean economy, stimulate entrepreneurship, catalyse investment and assist in wider social development in local communities. Such linkages offer unprecedented opportunities to stem and reverse the declines in traditional agriculture, stimulate the rapid growth in “new‟ agriculture and build resilience and sustainability of Caribbean economies. The latter is particularly critical for reducing the high levels of foreign exchange leakage in tourism, preserving cultural identity, reducing poverty in local communities and enhancing local awareness and good practices with respect to climate change and environmental issues.
Goal: To provide a mechanism for managing and increasing the local and regional development impact of Tourism and Agriculture through the creation of a collaborative and inclusive planning and implementation framework that can drive trade and new business between the two sectors.
Objectives
· To promote linkages between the agrifood sector and the tourism industry to increase sustainable sourcing through the strengthening of agritourism policy and strategy in the Caribbean
· To increase the understanding and awareness of the current deficiencies in the supply of fresh and processed agricultural products along the value chain and the actions needed
· To design inter-sectoral and inclusive policies which promote PPPs for improved local food use and consumption.
· To identify concrete regional projects that can be supported under the intra ACP EU funding.

Tourism is the lifeblood of many Pacific economies and agritourism provides a promising avenue for diversification and trade growth. High quality, nutritious and healthy food, available every day of the year, is critical to hotels, lodges and resorts. Often the food purchasing bill of a tourism site is large in comparison to the size of the local economy, yet surprisingly little of this is spent locally, even when supplies are available from farmers, fishermen and small-scale agribusinesses. The challenges of shifting food-sourcing to local suppliers are considerable – achieving this in a way that meets commercial needs and customer preferences and meets food and safety requirements would be one way in which tourism operations can significantly increase their contribution to local economic development.

Food and wine experiences have long been an integral part of the State’s tourism marketing message promoting South Australia as a visitor destination.
However, despite South Australia being recognised as the home of Australian wine we cannot rest on our laurels, as other State’s aggressively target these opportunities recognising travellers’ desire for such experiences.
Furthermore, while South Australia has some outstanding food experiences, consumer research reveals that the State is not strongly associated with this attribute.
Acknowledging this, in 2008, the Minister’s Tourism Round Table established an industry led Food and Wine Tourism Working Group to address these issues.
This Group was asked to prepare a strategic plan to strengthen the State’s competitiveness in food and wine tourism and to forge stronger links between the food and wine tourism sectors.
This Plan is the culmination of the detailed investigations of the Working Group. It sets a clear path forward with detailed implementation action designed to realise the vision of SA being the world’s leading food and wine tourism destination by 2020.
I am pleased to submit this final report to the Minister’s Tourism Round Table. Special thanks go to the Working Group comprising:
• Susan Berlin
• David Cowperthwaite
• Caroline Densley
• Marc Dobson
• Pip Forrester
• Denise Manson (replaced Marc Dobson, Feb 2009)
• Mark McNamara
• Elaine Ratcliffe
• Neil Schultz
• Barbara Storey
• Uby Faddoul
Thanks are also expressed to Jan Douglas, Claudelle Martin, Joanne Podoliak, David Crinion and Steve Kernaghan of the South Australian Tourism Commission for their support in developing this strategy.

when we can return. Thank you Boris and staff for helping our vacation be so
