The Kinect was developed by Microsoft and PrimeSense as a controller-free gaming and entertainment device. Over 10 million units have been sold worldwide. Although Microsoft claimed it had safeguards against tampering, an open-source driver was developed just 6 days after a bounty was offered. This led to the Kinect being adapted for numerous creative uses beyond gaming, as an open-source community with over 2,000 members formed to explore its possibilities.
