SUBTRACTION SIGN (SYMBOL)
 This is the subtraction symbol. When you see it,
you are making a bigger number smaller.
-
EQUAL SIGN (SYMBOL)
 This is the equal sign. It is also a symbol. This is
what we use when we want to show the answer to
a problem.

WHAT IS SUBTRACTION?
 Subtraction is when you take a number and make it
smaller by using another number.
Start with 3 objects take away 1 and how many
objects do you have left?
- =
WHAT IS SUBTRACTION? SLIDE 2
 You are right! The answer is 2.
3 - 1 = 2

LET’S TRY ANOTHER ONE!
 Start with 4 bears, subtract 2 bears, how many do
you have left?

SUBTRACTION GAMES
 Guess my number
Write a number on a slate, but do not let the children see the number. Invite
the class to guess the number, based on one or more clues you give. Use
different types of clues, such as those that involve simple addition,
subtraction, place value or other information:
 The number that is 2 less than 5
 The number between 7and 9
 A number in the teens with a 6 in it
 A number with 2 and 4 as the digits
 Another number with 2 and 4 as the digits
 The number of legs on a chair
 The number that is 1 less than 6
 The number that is 1 less than 10
 The number of wheels on a car
 The number that is 2 less than 8
SUBTRACTION GAMES
 Subtraction Top-it
Requires a deck with 4 each of number cards 0-5 to practice differences for
facts within 5. Students will flip 2 cards at-a-time taking turns to determine
the difference between the 2 numbers. When a student gets the answer
correct, they get to keep the 2 cards. The student with the greatest amount of
cards at the end is the winner.
SUBTRACTION GAMES
 Dice subtraction
Players use pairs of customized dice labeled 0-5. Players roll their own dice,
subtract their lower numbers from their higher numbers, and announce the
differences. The player with the larger difference marks a tally on a scrap
piece of paper.
MATERIALS
 Counters
 Cards with number 0-5 each deck containing 4 of
each number.
 Customized dice labeled 0-5.
 Scrap paper and pencils.
