1. I have been working in plastics extrusion since 2002
Starting at premier profiles at warmsworth as a machine operator I quickly took interest in how the
machines worked and got promoted to tool slinger and trainee machine setter
In 2004 premier profiles closed down and I was made redundant I applied for the job as polybutelene
setter at polypipe and took an internal transfer to the Neale road site in Doncaster
I was working on the polybutelene lines as a highly competent setter for 9 years before being
promoted to shift setter/supervisor in December 2013 untill February 2015 when I made the move to
wavin as development technician to improve and further my career
When I was shift supervisor my day consisted of completing all safety checks on extruders and other
machinery including pipe coilers and overhead cranes
Filling out fire registers
And delegating work to the operators on shift and making sure everyone was working safely and to
company rules and regulations
Consulting with production planning and starting up any extruders that are required to run to make
planned products including 5 layer polybutelene pipes, mono layer polybutelene pipes, polyethylene
pipes polypropylene pipes and polystyrene sheet
Before I was shift supervisor/setter I was the shift polybutelene setter responsible for 6 battenfeld
extruders producing 5 layer polybutelene pipes with co-extrudered barrier and adhesives varying in
size from 10mm pipe to 28mm pipe and monolayer polybutelene pipe varying in size from a 10mm
pipe to a 28mm pipe
I was also responsible for carrying out any tool changes required using the SMED techniques I was
trained to use and starting up the machines and getting the products in to specification and running
efficiently and then to solve any problems that appeared throughout the shift
I have worked closely with in house technicians doing tool trials, material trials and line speed trials
I have also worked closely with external technicians and engineers and material suppliers to get
machines running faster and more efficient producing better quality products
I also work well with the maintenance team helping out the fitters and electricians when problems
have occurred on machines
I am able to strip down an extruder from the die head to the extruder barrel including removing screen
pack changers and extruder screws for cleaning of the tooling
