KidsTek is a non-profit that provides after-school computer skills training to underserved youth. It partners with schools and organizations to deliver programming using volunteer instructors and a project-based learning approach. KidsTek has experienced growth since 1999 and now serves over 1,200 unduplicated students across multiple school districts. It aims to expand in 2009 through a new sponsor program that allows funders to directly support individual sites.

In 2006, Jeffco Public Schools in Colorado was looking for a way to address the staggering number of students that were failing classes as well as provide options for students that wanted to learn in a way that modeled their digital lives. The district also wanted to expand educational options for the hundreds of students that were leaving the district each year to learn online elsewhere.
In order to meet these needs, Jeffco Public Schools turned to Blackboard to expand educational offerings with online courses.
Jeffco Public Schools shares how Blackboard software helped accomplish the following:
Develop a five-year road map for online learning,
Address the districts withdrawal and failure rate,
Provide online learning opportunities without students having to leave their school,
Launch a statewide online school and,
Use online learning as a vehicle for organizational change.
Effective K-12 Communication in Action

EDUCAUSE 2015: Leveraging Your Existing LMS to Deliver Competency-Based Programs
The University of Wisconsin System used their learning management system (LMS) to deliver competency-based programs. They created UW Flex to provide self-paced, competency-based programs to address the needs of nontraditional students. The LMS supported CBE by facilitating customized curricula oriented around competencies, communication tools, and access to learning resources. Both students and faculty experienced impacts from the transition to CBE, including changes to assessments, resources, and roles. The presentation discussed how their LMS partner, D2L, further supported CBE through personalization, analytics, and services.

Many districts are turning to online credit recovery to combat the challenge of lowering dropout rates while meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Often called the "silent epidemic" in our nation's high schools, the negative consequences of dropping out do not stop with low graduation rates but also pose challenges to our nation's economic and social well being.
Join North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) as they discuss how they created and implemented an online credit recovery program. Already equipped with classic online courses for AP and first time credit, NCVPS decided to offer a credit recovery option as well.
Michelle Lourcey, Curriculum and Instruction Division Director, Credit Recovery and Modular Learning, NCVPS and Jeff Page, Credit Recovery Specialist, NCVPS will describe how they got started creating their 10 courses, complete with content aligned to state standards, and describe their mastery model. They will also share how the program allows students to move at their own pace and provides flexible learning opportunities.
We'll also explore how Blackboard is providing the foundation for this statewide online credit recovery program and review the tools and features NCVPS is using within the Blackboard platform including Adaptive Release.
