Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

According to Rommey (1997: 16), Information systems that govern how to collect, enter, process, and store data and how to manage to store, manage, control and report information in a way that finds an organization can achieve its stated goals. According to Leitch Rosses (in Jugiyanto, 2005: 11), Information system is a system within the organization that meets the needs of daily transaction management, supports operations, is managerial and strategic activities of an organization and provides certain external parties with the necessary reports According to Gordon B. Davis (1991: 91), Information system is a system that receives input or input data and instructions, processes data according to instructions and releases the results.
- 3. Information systems are combinations of hardware, software, and telecommunications networks that people build and use to collect, create, and distribute useful data, typically in organizational settings. (Bogour, 2014). There are some general types of information systems. For example, a database management system (DBMS) is a combnination of software and data that makes it possible to organize and analyse data. DBMS software is typically not designed to work a specific organization or a specific type of analysis. Rather, it is a general- purpose information system. Another example is an electronic spreadsheet. This is a tool for basic data analysis based on formulas that define relationships among the data. For example, you can use a spreadsheet to calculate averages for a set of values or to plot the trend of a value over time. (Zandbergen, 2002)
