MODERNISM AS A LITERARY MOVEMENT
Literary modernism or modernist literature,
originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly
in Europe and north America, and is characterized by a
self-conscious break with traditional ways of writing, in
both poetry and prose fiction writing modernism
experimented with literary form and expression as
exemplified by Ezra pound's maxim to "Make it new". This
literary movement was driven by a conscious desire to
overturn traditional modes of representation and express
the new sensibilities of their time.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERNIST LITERATURE
 In the literature of Modern age, the individual is given more importance
than the society. Modernist writers made a constant effort to delve deeper
in the human psythen.
 Traditional rhyme schemes, rhythen and meter were abandoned and
writers started adopting free verse as a main form of poetry which was in
a way form providing them the freedom from the limitation of old forms.
 Modernistersture embraces fragmentation as a forme reinforces the
fragmentation of reality and contradicts notions of totality and

during the Victorian Age was
revived with great force at
the beginning of the 20th
century and this course of six
decades witnessed many
trends and cuments in the

CONCLUSION
Modernism is a tough word to define, because scholars disagree on
what it means. We all agree that Modernism changed the way we
understand our cultural center and the margins-it redefined what is
considered art and innovations and artists' self - consciousness about
questions of form and structure. Modern literature includes work
that celebrates the " Sub literary," including everyday life, objects,
and marginalized voicesand people. Some of it is politically
engaged, some is not. Most importantly, modernism challenges
tradition, while establishing a new mode of poetic expression. It is a
" tradition of the new".
