Over the last ten years, smartphones and tablets and pervasive Internet connectivity have taken over our lives, and more importantly the lives of our children. In this talk for Loughborough University's 2018 Learning and Teaching conference I reflect on how higher education could respond to this trend. I invite the audience to consider what children who have always had access to the sum total of human knowledge will will expect and need from universities in the future, and how we might best support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to thrive

We live in uncertain times. Never before has a species had such a devastating impact on Earth. First through potential nuclear armageddon, now through human-made climate breakdown. Similarly, many innovations and technologies have made us more connected than ever, but we are equally more separate and disconnected. Finally, not only our natural climate but equally so our political and scientific climate are on fire. What to do? It is exactly in these uncertain times, changing times, that we might dare to dream collectively, together, on how we might move beyond the current mess we have found ourselves in. It is time to stage the revolution and commit ourselves to a more equitable world that respects planetary boundaries, embraces biodiversity, energy, water, wellbeing, society, and culture. In this talk I will look at the role that technology plays, and could play in, making such dreams a reality, and how new tools and paradigms developed under the moniker of the makers movement and maker spaces, open-source and low tech have the potential to remake the shaky ground (physical, conceptual — dare I say — ontological) on which we stand. Can technology, AI, the internet, open-source software and hardware really be of much help here? And why are anthropologists and engineers uniquely positioned to help? The BBC Micro:Bit - It does (way) more than you think!

The slides for my BBC Micro:Bit talk - First given at Notts IoT 25-04-19. This diminutive device may be affordable and have the perception of being aimed at children... But we'll spend the evening changing your mind! We'll start by introducing the basics of the Micro:Bit including how to create our first program. Next we'll move on to how to use the built in sensors and I/O. Once we've got that sorted, we can start looking at the Radio and Serial Communications. Finally we'll cover more advanced topics including how to extend the Micro:Bit's capabilities with our own Extensions.

Our phones are powerful, always-on, always-connected machines that pipe data to and from these terminals (or devices). The result is an amazing collection of capabilities and experiences for the user. I’ve spent the last few months diving into the world of the mobile mainframe, bouncing between platforms and devices. I’d like to share my own journey, highlight the powerful experiences this model provides, discuss the downsides of the mobile mainframe as it stands today, and make some outlandish predictions about the future as I see it.
